Dr. Peter J. Haas has been recognized as professor emeritus at Case Western Reserve University since 2016.

With more than 35 years of professional experience in academia, Dr. Haas has been recognized as professor emeritus at Case Western Reserve University since 2016. Prior to his retirement, he was a professor of Jewish studies with the university from 2000 to 2016. Earlier in his career, he was a professor with Vanderbilt University from 1980 to 1999.
Dr. Haas began his career as a student at the University of Michigan, obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in ancient Near East history in 1970. He then joined Hebrew Union College, where he completed a Master of Arts in Hebrew literature in 1974. He continued his studies with Brown University, earning a Doctor of Philosophy in the history of religion, Judaism and Jewish studies in 1981. He has been ordained as a rabbi since 1974.
A respected voice in his areas of interest, Dr. Haas has been affiliated with a number of professional organizations. He is a former member of the American Academy of Religion, the Society of Biblical Literature, the Society for the Scientific Study of Religion, and the Central Conference of American Rabbis. A member of the board of directors of the Jewish Federation of Middle Tennessee, he has also been a docent at the Maltz Museum, court-appointed special advocate at the Cuyahoga County Juvenile Court, and a volunteer of pastoral care at South Pointe Hospital with the Cleveland Clinic since 2016.
In addition to his primary endeavors, Dr. Haas has written extensively in his areas of expertise. The author of "History of Mishnaic Law of Agriculture: Second Tithe" in 1981, he also wrote "Talmud of Babylonia: Meilah-Tamid" in 1986 and "Morality after Auschwitz: The Radical Challenge of the Nazi Ethic" in 1988. In 1985, he served as a guest editor of "Semeia 34," and from 1990 to 1995, he was a book review editor for the Journal of Reform Judaism.
Throughout his career, Dr. Haas has been recognized for his achievements. He has been featured in numerous honors publications, including Who's Who in Religion and Who's Who in the South and Southwest. Looking toward the future, he intends to continue volunteering in adult and continuing education at Case Western Reserve University and Baldwin Wallace University.
