For 50 years, Dr. Pak excelled in the field of biology research and education, currently holding the title of Oreffice distinguished professor emeritus of biological sciences with Purdue University, where he also served as assistant professor of biology, associate professor of biology and professor of biology between 1965 and 1987. Earlier in his career, he taught physics at Stevens Institute of Technology from 1960 to 1965.
Over the years, Dr. Pak has also gained valuable expertise through the National Institutes of Health as a panel member of the Visual Sciences B Study Section, the National Eye Institute as a member of the Vision Research Review Committee, and the Roche Research Foundation as a visiting professor in Basel, Switzerland. He was also honored to give the keynote address at the Sixth Annual Behavioral and Molecular Neuroscience Symposium at Meharry Medical College. He pioneered the use of genetics, using the fruitfly Drosophilia melanogaster, in the study of phototransduction, the mechanism by which light signals are converted to nerve signals in the eye.
An expert in his field, Dr. Pak holds a Bachelor of Arts, summa cum laude, from Boston University and a Doctor of Philosophy in nuclear physics from Cornell University. He maintains affiliation with the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Physiological Society, the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, and the Biophysical Society. He co-authored "The Molecular Biology of the Retina," "Molecular Genetics of Inherited Eye Disorders" and "Degenerative Diseases of the Retina." He also contributed to the Journal of Biological Chemistry, the Journal of General Physiology, the European Molecular Biology Organization Journal, Cell, Nature and Science.
In light of his professional excellence, Dr. Pak earned a Public Health Service Center Development Award, the Herbert Newby McCoy Award for Research from Purdue University, and the Friedenwald Award from the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology. For his 80th birthday in 2012, the Journal of Neurogenetics devoted the entire issue to his ad his group's work. Additionally, he was featured in Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in the Midwest, and Who's Who in Science and Engineering. In the coming years, Dr. Pak intends to enjoy his retirement and continue giving back to others.
