Prior to her retirement, she found success with the University of South Carolina as a professor from 1997 to 2005, an associate professor from 1979 to 1997, an assistant professor from 1974 to 1979, an instructor from 1972 to 1974, and a director of graduate studies in the history department from 1990 to 1992. Earlier in her career, Dr. Synnott excelled as a history teacher with the MacDuffie School from 1963 to 1968.
Dr. Synnott initially pursued an education at Radcliffe College, where she obtained a Bachelor of Arts in history in 1961. She continued her academic efforts with a Master of Arts in American civilizations in 1964 at Brown University. Dr. Synnott concluded her studies at the University of Massachusetts in 1974, graduating with a Doctor of Philosophy in history.
Throughout her career, Dr. Synnott has been celebrated for her contributions. A Fulbright scholar, she has accepted grants from the American Council of Learned Societies. Likewise, Dr. Synnott has been featured in numerous publications, such as Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in the South and Southwest, Who's Who in the World and Who's Who of American Women.
