In 1951, Dr. Morris earned a Bachelor of Arts from The University College of South Wales and Monmouthshire (now known as Cardiff University), swiftly following this accomplishment with a Master of Arts from the University of Cambridge in 1953. He went on to complete coursework at the Union Theological Seminary from 1957 to 1960 and earn another Master of Arts from Colgate University in 1961, along with a Doctor of Philosophy from Columbia University the same year. Demonstrating unmatched academic focus, Dr. Morris earned an honorary Doctor of Laws from Hartwick College in 1979, an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from Elmira College in 1990, and an honorary Doctor of Letters from Skidmore College in 1991.
Dr. Morris was ordained to ministry by the Presbyterian Church in 1954 and went on to work as a minister for Vernon and Vernon Center Presbyterian Churches from 1954 to 1957. He then served Colgate University as an instructor, assistant professor, associate professor, professor of philosophy and religion, director of the Division of Humanities, director of the Division of University Studies, provost, dean of faculty and acting president, serving the institution from 1960 to 1979. Demonstrating considerable professional focus, Dr. Morris also worked for Union College as a professor of philosophy and president, retiring in 1990 with the title of professor emeritus. He also served as chancellor of Union University from 1979 to 1990.
In addition to his primary endeavors, Dr. Morris was a Leverhulme visiting fellow at the University of Exeter in England from 1968 to 1969 and chairman of the Commission of Indiana Colleges and Universities from 1984 to 1986. He has also served as trustee at Cazenovia College. Demonstrating versatility in his profession, Dr. Morris served with the Royal Air Force from 1943 to 1947. Due to his professional prominence, he received the Schenectady Patroon Award in 1989, the Union College Founders Medal in 1990, and Colgate University's Distinguished Service Award in 1978.
Initially a minister in Wales, Dr. Morris contributes his professional drive to a commitment to human development. Though his career is punctuated with accomplishments, he considers his initial arrival in New York City in the early 1950s to be his career's most meaningful highlight. Demonstrating continued interest in professional developments, Dr. Morris belongs to such organizations as the American Association of University Professors, the American Philosophical Association, the American Academy of Religion, and the Society for the Study of Theology.
Dr. Morris has been featured in numerous editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education and Who's Who in the East. He is a fellow of Cardiff University.
