A critical care physician and intensivist with more than two decades of experience, Dr. Pastores is highly regarded for his expertise, professionalism and integrity. His noteworthy achievements include in-depth research on septic shock, use and costs of critical care medicine, intensivist workforce, and the use of corticosteroids in critical illnesses. His career has blended clinical practice, research and education in a way that has allowed him to establish himself as a leader in his field. He has authored over 200 peer reviewed articles and book chapters. Today, Dr. Pastores finds success as the vice chair of education for the department of anesthesiology and fellowship program director for critical care medicine at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City.
At the same time, Dr. Pastores is a professor of medicine and anesthesiology for Weill Cornell Medicine, a role that he has held since 2007. His previous roles have included attending critical care physician with Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center since 1999; assistant director for the surgical ICU and director of emergency services for the James J. Peters VA Medical Center in New York City; attending critical care physician for Montefiore Medical Center; and house officer for the department of surgery at the Cabrini Medical Center. In addition to these prominent roles, Dr. Pastores is well-regarded for his contributions as a member of the Board of Regents for the Society of Critical Care Medicine and a member of the editorial boards of Critical Care Medicine, Chest, and Journal of Critical Care. He was appointed the Chancellor of the American College of Critical Care Medicine in 2019.
Dr. Pastores completed a Bachelor of Science from the University of Santo Tomas in Manila, Philippines, in 1978. Thereafter, he attended Lyceum-Northwestern University in Dagupan City, Philippines, where he achieved a Doctor of Medicine in 1982. In preparation for a career in medicine, he completed a residency in internal medicine with the Metropolitan Hospital Center in New York City. After completing this three year program, Dr. Pastores became a chief resident for the center for one year.
Dr. Pastores then went on to complete a fellowship in pulmonary and critical care medicine at New York University Langone Medical Center in 1992 and a fellowship in critical care medicine at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City in 1993. His successes have led to him earning a Safar Global Partner Award from the Society of Critical Care Medicine, several Distinguished Service Awards from the Society of Critical Care Medicine and the title of Castle Connolly Top Doctor for five consecutive years. Dr. Pastores is a Master of the American College of Physicians and a Fellow of the American College of Critical Care Medicine and the American College of Chest Physicians (CHEST).
