A professor emeritus at both the University of Maryland at College Park and Cal State San Marcos, he taught for more than 40 years. Dr. Gannon began teaching at the University of Maryland, College Park, in 1968 as a lecturer of management and organizational behavior in the College of Business and Management, subsequently renamed the Robert H. Smith School of Business. Becoming a full professor of management in 1974, he later taught as a professor and chair of the faculty of management and organization between 1977 and 1978 and served as an acting associate dean for academic affairs between 1978 and 1979 and returned as department chair for 1979 through 1981. He then resumed teaching full-time in the Robert H. Smith School of Business in 1981. From 1985 through 1989 he was co-founder and co-director of the Small Business Development Center at the Smith School, funded by the U.S. Small Business Administration. In 1997 he founded the Center for Global Business at Smith and, with the chair of the Economics Department, co-founded and directed an undergraduate honors program, "Business, Society and the Economy." He retired from Smith in June of 2003 as Professor Emeritus and immediately became full professor at Cal State San Marcos, retiring as Professor Emeritus in 2015.
A three-time Fulbright professor in Germany, Thailand and Austria, Dr. Gannon also held academic appointments at Columbia University between 1964 and 1967 and was a research assistant at the University of Pittsburgh in the Graduate School of Public Health in 1962. He served as the Smith School's director for the International Management and Compliance Training certificate program for Northrop-Grumman, jointly offered by Smith and the University of Baltimore, which was required for managers seeking to work outside of the U.S.A. Over his career he was a visiting professor at numerous institutions, including Bocconi University in Italy, University College Dublin, the London Business School, the University of Tübingen in Germany and the University of Kassel in Germany.
Writing extensively in his field, Dr. Gannon has authored, co-authored, edited and co-edited 13 books but 21 in total with new editions. He served on the editorial board for the Journal of Business Research between 1983 and 1999 and the Journal of International Business Education in 2001, and has contributed chapters to books and articles in various scholarly journals. Some of the 21 books Dr. Gannon has authored include "Dynamics of Competitive Strategy" (1990, with co-authors Ken G. Smith and Curtis Grimm), "Working Across Cultures: Applications and Exercises" in 2001, "Cultural Metaphors: Readings, Research Translations and Commentary" in 2001, "Paradoxes of Culture and Globalization" in 2008, "Understanding Global Cultures: Metaphorical Journeys Through 34 Nations, Clusters of Nations, Continents & Diversity" (Gannon, first edition, 1994; Gannon and Pillai, 6th ed., 2016 and "Management: Managing for Results" in 1988, with a Spanish edition produced in 1995. Various editions of "Understanding Global Cultures" have been translated into Korean and Italian.
In 2002, Dr. Gannon received the University of Maryland's International Landmark Award for exceptional contributions in the global area. He has been included in the 58th edition of Who's Who in America. Dr. Gannon received a Bachelor of Arts in sociology and philosophy, magna cum laude, from the University of Scranton in 1961. He then completed postgraduate work in sociology at the University of Pittsburgh between 1961 and 1963 before earning a Doctor of Philosophy in industrial relations and management from Columbia University in 1969.
Over the years Professor Gannon has been a consultant to many organizations, government agencies and trade unions. These include GEICO Insurance, the U.S. Office of Personnel Management, and Northrop-Grumman.
