Dr. Field is a professor emeritus of general and physical chemistry who taught at the University of Montana in Missoula for 33 years. Hired in 1975 as an assistant professor in the department of chemistry, he later served as an associate professor and, between 1984 and 2008, served as a full professor. He also chaired the department of chemistry for five years beginning in 1990. He formerly worked as a senior research chemist at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh and was both a research associate and visiting assistant professor at the University of Oregon. Dr. Field was in the field for 40 years.
Maintaining a personal research program at the University of Montana during his tenure, Dr. Field focused his research efforts on nonlinear dynamics, especially in chemistry, and involved the chemistry and dynamics of the oscillatory Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction. Other such research included nonlinear psychological models and research in atmospheric and climate modeling.
During his career, Dr. Field was a committee member for the hiring of the University of Montana's first softball coach in 2004. He also served as a visiting professor at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana and the University of Würzburg in Germany, and was a visiting scientist at the National Center of Atmospheric Research. He was on the panel on graduate fellowships in Washington, DC, and was an assistant director for the EPSCoR program in Montana for the National Science Foundation.
Dr. Field has authored more than 100 research articles in various scholarly journals. He was the editor of "Oscillations and Traveling Waves in Chemical Systems" in 1985 and "Chaos in Chemistry and Biochemistry" in 1993. He also refereed many scientific journals throughout his career.
A longtime member of the American Chemical Society, Dr. Field was a tour speaker for the society eight times between 1983 and 1998 and chaired the Montana section during 1979. He was also an editorial advisory board member for the society's Journal of Physical Chemistry between 1988 and 1994 and the International Journal of Chemical Kinetics between 1995 and 2000.
The recipient of an ongoing grant from the National Science Foundation beginning in 1978, Dr. Field also received a Burlington No. Award for Scholarship in 1990. He has been cited in several editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, and Who's Who in the West. He notably received a Bachelor of Science from the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 1963, Master of Science from the College of The Holy Cross in 1964, and Doctor of Philosophy in physical chemistry from the University of Rhode Island in 1968.
Since retiring, Dr. Field has been spending a lot of his free time with his family and extended family. Married to his late wife Judith Lauchaire from 1966 to 2013, they share two children and five grandchildren, all of whom live in Missoula. He also does a lot of hiking in the Bitterroot Mountains of western Montana and other places, mainly in the Pacific Northwest. When he is not hiking, he can often be found either bicycling or working in his garden.
