Beginning his career as a teacher at the University of Science and Technology of China in 1970 after obtaining his bachelor's degree, he served as a researcher at the Optical Institute of Anhui in China from 1975 to 1978 and a research fellow at the University of Cambridge in England from 1983 to 1984. During this time, he also worked for the University of Washington in the United States as a research associate between 1982 and 1984, as well as the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, as a research assistant professor from 1984 to 1985. Traveling abroad to Norway, Dr. Tao was active with the IBM Bergen Scientific Center in 1987.
Dr. Tao further flourished as an assistant professor at Northeastern University from 1985 to 1989, an assistant and an associate professor of physics at Southern Illinois University-Carbondale (SIUC) between 1989 and 1993 and a visiting professor in the department of physics at Princeton University in 1997. He also found success with SIUC as a professor of mechanical engineering from 1994 to 2000, the chair of the physics department from 1994 to 1999, and a professor of physics from 1993 to 2000. Excelling in the same capacity for Temple University since 2000, he has also chaired the department of physics during this time. Alongside these endeavors, Dr. Tao has additionally held the post of a professor in the Independent Blue Cross Cardiovascular Research Center in the Medical School of Temple University since 2016.
To prepare for his illustrious career, Dr. Tao pursued a formal education at the University of Science and Technology of China, earning a Bachelor of Science in 1970. Thereafter, he traveled to New York City, where he enrolled at Columbia University and obtained a Master of Arts and Master of Philosophy in 1980 and 1982, respectively. Concluding his education at the Columbia University, Dr. Tao graduated with a Doctor of Philosophy in physics in 1982.
Demonstrating versatility in his profession, Dr. Tao has also been the editor-in-chief of the International Journal of Modern Physics B and Modern Physics Letters B since 2010. Authoring numerous books during his tenure, he was also the editor of "Electrorheological Fluids" in 1992, "Electrorheological Fluids, Mechanisms, Properties, Materials and Applications" in 1994 an "Electrorheological Fluids and Magnetorheological Suspensions" in 2000 and 2010. Among his notable achievements, Dr. Tao is most renowned for the discovery that topological quantization is general for quantum systems with two periodic variables, that the electric-field induced solidification is the physical mechanism of electrorheological fluids, and that the crystalline structure of electrorheological fluids is a body-centered tetragonal lattice. In addition, he discovered that high temperature superconducting granular particles aggregate together into a ball in a strong electric field, the application of electronic field to reduce crude oil viscosity improves energy transport and energy saving, and application of electrorheology reduces fat level in chocolate and makes healthier and tasteful chocolate. Likewise, Dr. Tao realized that the application of magnetorheology to blood flow reduces blood viscosity and suppressing turbulence in blood circulation can prevent heart attacks and stroke.
In light of his exceptional undertakings, Dr. Tao accepted the Outstanding Research Award from Temple University in 2014, as well as the Southern Illinois University Outstanding Scholar Award in 1998, the university's highest award to a scholar for creativity at the national and international levels. Impressively, he was presented with the Omni Magazine Prize for having solved the "vicious neighbor" mathematical puzzle, which had remained unsolved for 19 years, in 1987, and was selected by Nobel Laureate Professor T.D. Lee as the first CUSPEA student to attend Columbia University in 1979.
