Dr. Mills is a prominent philosophical counselor who has been certified by the American Philosophical Practitioners Association since 2011, and has a private counseling practice in New York City (www.pjmills-phd.com). Before that she was an assistant professor of political theory at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst from 1988 until attaining emeritus status in 2006. From 2010 to 2011 she was the communication coordinator in continuing and professional studies at The City College of New York. Earlier in her career, Dr. Mills taught at the University of Toronto in Ontario, Canada, as a lecturer from 1984 to 1986, and assistant professor of philosophy from 1986 to 1988.
Alongside her primary career endeavors, Dr. Mills was a visiting scholar at the Pembroke Center for Teaching and Research on Women at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island from 1999 to 2000. She was also an invited speaker at many conferences, including those held at the New School for Social Research, the University of Chicago, the University at Buffalo, the University of Pittsburgh, Mount Holyoke College, and the College of the Holy Cross. In addition, she lectured in the department of philosophy at Smith College in 1992, and served as a manuscript referee for the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada and for the Journal of the Northeastern Political Science Association. Civically as well as academically involved, Dr. Mills was a grassroots organizer for the anti-Vietnam War movement, the peace movement, and the women's movement in the 1970s.
Highly educated, Dr. Mills earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey in 1973, a Master of Arts in Philosophical Perspectives from Stony Brook University in New York in 1975, and a Doctor of Philosophy from York University in Ontario, Canada in 1984. She was awarded the prestigious Post-Doctoral Fellowship from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada for two years, from 1984 to 1986; the fellowship was administered by the department of philosophy at the University of Toronto. Maintaining affiliation with several professional organizations, she has been a member of the American Philosophical Association, the Society for Phenomenology and Existential Philosophy, the Hegel Society of America, and the Society for the Study of Women Philosophers. Dr. Mills is also a member of the American Counseling Association and the American Philosophical Practitioners Association.
Throughout her tenure, Dr. Mills contributed myriad articles to professional journals, chapters to books, and wrote book columns for newspapers and magazines. A prolific writer, she cites the publication of her first article "Hegel's Antigone" in The Owl of Minerva: The Journal of the Hegel Society of America (Vol. 17, No. 2) as a highlight of her career. Seen as groundbreaking by leading scholars in the field of Hegel studies, the article has been reprinted in major works on Hegel, including Hegel, volume II, ed. David Lamb, (The International Library of Critical Essays in the History of Philosophy: Ashgate Pub. Ltd., 1998); The Phenomenology of Spirit Reader: A Collection of Critical and Interpretive Essays, ed. Jon Stewart (SUNY Press, 1998); and in Hegel and Law, ed. Michael Salter (Philosophers and Law Series: Ashgate Pub. Ltd., 2002). A revised version of her doctoral dissertation, Woman, Nature, and Psyche, was published by Yale University Press in 1987, and she was the editor of Feminist Interpretations of G.W.F. Hegel part of the Re-Reading the Canon series published by the Pennsylvania State University Press in 1996. She has written scholarly articles on ancient philosophy, social ecology, dialectical theory from Hegel to Adorno, women's rights, and feminist theory. Her literary book columns include, among others, essays on Cézanne, Edna St. Vincent Millay, Charles Dickens, Penelope Fitzgerald, and Alice in Wonderland.
In light of her many accomplishments, Dr. Mills has accrued a variety of accolades and honors. She was the recipient of a Faculty Teaching Grant from the University of Massachusetts from 1991 to 1992, and in 1997 she received the Distinguished Teaching Award from the Delta Lambda chapter of Pi Sigma Alpha at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst. As noted above, she was awarded a much coveted two year postdoctoral fellowship from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada from 1984 to 1986.
