Backed by more than 25 years of professional excellence in neurophysiology and academia, Dr. Barris most recently served Nova Southeastern University as an assistant professor of optometry from 1995 until his retirement in 1998. At the inception of his career, he joined the University of Florida in Gainesville as a fellow of ophthalmology in 1976, holding the position for three years, before transferring to the Inter-American University of Puerto Rico as an assistant professor of optometry from 1983 to 1988. Thereafter, he served Queens College as a research assistant in psychology in 1989 and Michigan State University in East Lansing as an assistant professor of internal medicine and visiting assistant research professor of biochemistry between 1990 and 1994.
Alongside his primary academic appointments, Dr. Barris served the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City as an adjunct instructor of ophthalmology from 1980 to 1981 and Queens College as an adjunct lecturer in psychology from 1971 to 1976. Even though his career has been filled with highlights, he is especially proud of developing the Laser Speckle Visual Stimulator of evoked cortical potentials, discovering that the visual sensitivity of women increases on the days basal body temperature rises, and establishing that the electro-oculogram Arden ratio is inversely proportional to ocular malignant melanoma mass. He is also proud of the 43 scientific papers he has written over the course of his career, which have been highly cited by other scholars.
An expert in his field, Dr. Barris holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Rochester and a Doctor of Philosophy from the City University of New York. During the course of his career, he has contributed articles to professional journals, including Documenta Ophthalmologica, the Annals of Neurology, the Journal of Physiology, the American Journal of Physiology and the Journal of the Acoustical Society of America.
In light of his outstanding work in the field, Dr. Barris received a National Research Service Fellowship through the National Eye Institute, an institutional research grant through the American Cancer Society, and a grant from the National Society to Prevent Blindness. Likewise, he was highlighted in the first edition of Who's Who in Science and Engineering, published in 1992.
