Elisha Roscoe Richardson was named One of the 100 Most Influential Blacks in the United States by Ebony Magazine and Outstanding Faculty Member of the Year by the Meharry Medical College.

Growing up, Dr. Richardson and his peers did not have proper access to dental care. Therefore, once he graduated from high school, he made the decision to become a dentist so that he could give back to his community by providing those much-needed services. Once he earned his degree, however, he began serving as an officer in the U.S. Air Force in charge of the dental clinic. Noticing that the African American soldiers were not getting orthodontic care because they were told they did not need it, Dr. Richardson then began pursuing the field further to gain insight into people's faces and the teeth of the African American descent so that he could adapt, research, and develop what he had learned. Once he left the Air Force, he continued his studies by attending orthodontics school.
Serving for the U.S. Air Force at the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and in Germany between 1955 and 1960, Dr. Richardson soon after began his career in academia. Hired in 1962 as an assistant professor of orthodontics in the School of Dentistry at Meharry Medical College, he moved into the role of associate professor in 1967 and full professor in 1976. During his tenure at the Nashville college, he also served as an associate dean of the School of Dentistry between 1977 and 1985, chaired the department of orthodontics at the University of Colorado between 1985 and 1988 and served as dean of the School of Dentistry Meharry Medical College in 1988. He is currently the chair of the alumni's special advisory committee to the college, the alumni association, and the board of trustees.
During the late 1960s, Dr. Richardson was a consultant to the VA Hospital in Nashville. He later served as president of the medical and dental staff at Hubbard Hospital, Meharry Medical College, from 1971 to 1972 and was a member of the advisory council of the National Institute of Dental Research/National Institutes of Health from 1980 to 1984.
Dr. Richardson has contributed numerous articles to various scholarly journals. He is particularly proud of an article he published that was based on a longitudinal study that he conducted on facial growth. Implementing all reliable studies on facial growth throughout the world, Dr. Richardson did a comparison of several areas of the human face and found almost no difference across ethnic groups. Currently, he is doing a longitudinal three dimensional radiographic study of human facial growth.
An elected fellow of the American College of Dentists and diplomat of the American Board of Orthodontics, Dr. Richardson has also been affiliated with multiple other professional organizations. He is a past president of the National Dental Association, the Capital City Dental Society, the Pan-Tennessee Dental Association and the Nashville section of the International Association for Dental Research. He was the chair of the council on education for the American Association of Orthodontists from 1987 to 1989, chair of the orthodontic section of the American Association of Dental Schools from 1972 to 1974. Furthermore, he is a longstanding member of the Angle Society of Orthodontics, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Dental Association, the Craniofacial Biology Group and the American Association of Orthodontists, among others.
Named Most Outstanding Sophomore Dental Student by Meharry Medical College, Dr. Richardson was also named One of the 100 Most Influential Blacks in the United States by Ebony Magazine, Outstanding Faculty Member of the Year by the Meharry Medical College and Boss of the Year by the Parthenon chapter of the American Business Women's Association in Nashville. He has been included in the 44th and 45th editions of Who's Who in America as well.
Earning a Bachelor of Science at Southern University in 1951, Dr. Richardson then received a Doctor of Dental Surgery at Meharry Medical College in 1955, Master of Science at the University of Illinois in 1963 and Doctor of Philosophy in human growth and development at the University of Michigan in 1988. He is certified by the American Board of Orthodontics.
