The Stephen C. Scheiber Residency Teaching Award has been established by the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Buffalo.

Backed by more than five decades of professional excellence, Dr. Scheiber has excelled in psychiatry and education since 1964, starting as an intern with Mary Fletcher Hospital in Burlington, VT. From there, he completed a residency in psychiatry at Strong Memorial Hospital before pursuing a career in education through the University of Arizona, serving as an assistant professor, associate professor and full professor between 1970 and 1986. Over the years, he also gained valuable expertise through the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology as an executive secretary and then executive vice president and University of Arizona as professor, Northwestern University as adjunct professor and Medical College of Wisconsin as clinical professor of psychiatry. Additionally, he served the Isaac Ray Center, Inc., as president and chief executive officer, and also served as a guest professor at a plethora of institutions, including the University of Louisville, the Medical University of South Carolina, the Chicago Institute for Psychoanalysis and the Albany Medical Center. Today, he sits on the ethics committee of the American Psychiatric Association. In a career filled with highlights, he is especially proud of his years as a commissioned officer of the U.S. Public Health Service, during which time he was assigned to the Peace Corps in Sierra Leone and at the National Institutes of Health.
A diplomate through the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, Dr. Scheiber holds a Bachelor of Arts from Columbia College and an MD from the University at Buffalo. To remain abreast of changes in the field, he maintains affiliation with the Association for Academic Psychiatry which honored him with a lifetime achievement award as a former president, the American Board of Medical Specialties, from whom he received a Distinguished Service Award in 2007, and the American College of Psychiatrists, where he served as former treasurer and received a Distinguished Service in Psychiatry Award. Using his professional expertise, he also co-edited "The Impaired Physician," "Certification, Recertification and Lifetime Learning in Psychiatry," "Core Competencies for Psychiatric Practice" and "Core Competencies for Neurological Practice." Additionally, he contributed to such articles as "Comparative Effects of Group Psychotherapies in a Short-Term Inpatient Setting" and "Physicians at Risk for Suicide."
In light of his outstanding work, Dr. Scheiber earned the Harold E. Berson Award from the American Psychiatric Association Lifers, an Outstanding Teacher Award from the University of Arizona, a grant from the National Institute of Health for the Dialysis and Schizophrenia Pilot Project at the University of Arizona, and the Vestermark Psychiatry Educator Award from the American Psychiatric Association and the National Institute of Mental Health. He also received a Distinguished Psychiatrist Award from the American College of Psychiatrists as former treasurer, and a Founders Award from the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry. The Stephen C. Scheiber Residency Teaching Award has been established by the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Buffalo in recognition of faculty teaching of psychiatric residents. In the coming years, Dr. Scheiber intends to continue his work with the Group for the Advancement of Psychiatry on the Medical Education Committee, which has published numerous cutting-edge articles and where he served as past president.
Dr. Scheiber has been the beneficiary of the wisdom of many mentors throughout his career. Outstanding among them were Drs, S. Mouchly Small in Buffalo, NY, and John Romano in Rochester, NY, Henry Brosin in Tucson, AZ and John Racy in Rochester, NY and Tucson, AZ.
He is indebted to his wife of fifty-three years, Mary Ann, who pioneered as a nurse in dialysis in Buffalo, New York. She has supported his career development and has collaborated with him in his professional work in Sierra Leone, at the University of Arizona and at the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. They have three children, Lisa, Martin and Laua; three granddaughters, Alexis, Ariel and Brianna and one great-grandson, Troy.
