Ms. Tane retired in 1988 as the vice president of marketing for Utensco in Port Washington, NY, after eight years of service. A trademark and brand of United Utensils, Inc., she also served as the company's vice president of operations and control within the united molded products division of United Utensils between 1978 and 1980. She previously held numerous other roles, working her way up from sales manager to marketing director beginning in 1973. Prior to entering the manufacturing industry, Ms. Tane was an administrative assistant for a local business, worked in retail and taught as an elementary school teacher in Long Beach, NY.
During her tenure in manufacturing, Ms. Tane was responsible for co-inventing a plastic container and handling assembly. She also served on the board of directors for Peerless Aerospace Corporation. Outside of her field, she was on the dean's advisory board of the Boston University CAS, was on the advisory committee of the Cornell Library and served as a council member and chair of special functions for the Grolier Club, among other roles. She remains active as a member of the Lotos Club, friend of the New York Public Library, lifetime member of the Ronald McDonald House and the Hadassah, is past chairman of the Commission for Women's Equality and American Jewish Congress, and member of the board of directors of the Poe Foundation. Ms. Tane is a fellow of the JP Morgan Library and Museum.
A collector of books, Ms. Tane was able to successfully bid on "Tamerlane," the rarest book in American literature. Written in 1827 by Edgar Allan Poe, she has hosted several major exhibitions at the Grolier Club on Poe and 19th century authors. Ms. Tane is also the author of the publication "Nevermore: The Edgar Allen Poe Collection of Susan Jaffe Tane" in 2006 and "Evermore: The Edgar Allan Poe Collection of Susan Jaffe Tane" in 2014. Furthermore, she authored "A Literary Fellowship" in 2017 and was the executive producer of American Masters' "Edgar A. Poe Buried Alive."
Ms. Tane received a Poe Studies Association Tane Travel Scholarship Award. She has been included in approximately 40 editions of Who's Who, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Finance and Business, and Who's Who in the World. Ms. Tane holds a Bachelor of Science from Boston University and later completed postgraduate coursework at Hofstra University and the C.W. Post campus of Long Island University.
Formerly married to the late Irwin Tane, Ms. Tane has two wonderful sons and two amazing grandchildren. In her free time, she loves playing bridge and is a Bridge Life Master.
