Levitan Director of Education and Professor of the Practice at Brandeis University in Waltham, MA. Notably in this role, she created the education studies major and a new program for teacher leaders to further support their professional growth. Previously, she spent 11 years as superintendent for the North Colonie School District in Newtonville, New York, where she worked with others to combine standards-based education with student-centered learning. Dr. Levenson was also the principal of Newton North High School in MA for 8 years. In reflecting on these achievements, Dr. Levenson notes that they have been the highlights of her career because these leadership positions enabled her to make sure kids would have a good foundation to think critically and creatively and move forward in their careers and lives in whatever direction they choose.
Her efforts have not gone unnoticed, as Dr. Levenson has been afforded opportunities to make even more of an impact in education. Since 2014, she has been a member of the Harvard Education Press (HEP) Advisory Board. She joined this organization after REP published her book, Pathways to Teacher Leadership: Emerging Models and Changing Roles. Previously, she was a thought leader for the American Association of School Administrators, as well as a faculty member and P.I. for the CETE Urban Teacher Initiative, funded by the Ford Foundation. Today, Dr. Levenson serves as co-president of Public Schools for Tomorrow.
Dr. Levenson earned a Bachelor of Arts from Brandeis University in 1964, a Master of Education from Boston University in 1971, and a doctorate from the Harvard Graduate School of Education in 1984. She is a certified secondary principal and superintendent. She served on the Harvard Graduate School Alumni Council, where she was president from 1991-92, the Harvard Principals Center, and the Center for Educational Leadership. She is associated with a number of organizations, including the School Superintendents Association, Phi Delta Kappa, and the Consortium for Excellence in Teacher Education (CETE).
