With more than 50 years of professional experience to his credit, Dr. Phelan holds the title of director emeritus of the School of Art at the University of Oklahoma and is founder and managing member of Quail Creek Editions. He began his career in 1967 as an art teacher. He then served as a medic with the 101st Abn. Division in Vietnam where he was awarded a Bronze Star and Purple Heart. Over the years, he gained valuable expertise at the Pratt Institute as the assistant to the president and dean of academic affairs, and at the Tokyo International Business College as an advisor. At the University of Oklahoma he served as a professor and director of the School of Art, and in the Weitzenhoffer Family College of Fine Arts as a professor, director of the arts management program, and coordinator of the international programs in the arts. He has also served as a consultant to the United Nations and to several state higher education agencies as well as to the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. He was heavily influenced by his parents, who were artists and teachers, which inspired him to pursue his long career path.
A member for many years of the College Art Association and National Art Education Association, Dr. Phelan holds a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Fine Arts from the Pratt Institute and a Doctor of Philosophy from New York University. He has authored and edited a dozen books, written many articles for scholarly journals and curated many exhibitions. In his spare time, he also has contributed to his community through the Art Lab School of Fine and Applied Arts at Snug Harbor in Staten Island, NY, as an advisory board member of the Oklahoma Arts Institute and the New York Vietnam Veterans Memorial Commission, where he was a member and chair of the jury subcommittee.
For his excellence in the field, Dr. Phelan earned features in multiple editions of Who's Who in American Education and the 23rd edition of Who's Who in the East and was listed for more than 25 years in Who's Who in American Art. In the near future, Dr. Phelan intends to focus his personal growth and career with Quail Creek Editions.
