In 1965, Ms. Shuey earned a Bachelor of Arts in history from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, following this accomplishment with a Master of Library Science from the same institution in 1966. Now celebrating a career spanning nearly four decades, she started out as a reference librarian and supervisor of the reserve book department at the S. Price Gilbert Memorial Library at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, before going on to serve as assistant branch librarian and branch manager at Dallas Public Library. Ms. Shuey most recently worked as director of the University Park Public Library, serving in this capacity from 2002 until she retired in 2005.
Demonstrating considerable professional focus, Ms. Shuey was a small library consultant from 1998 to 2002, and she has also served on the University Park Public Library's advisory board. She was the editor of Library Chatter from 1990 until 1998 and a reviewer for the Library Journal for over 20 years. An influential member of her field, she has contributed several articles to professional journals, and she was the subject of a WFAA-TV Spirit of Texas segment in 1986. In addition to her professional endeavors, Ms. Shuey was a board member of the Southeast YMCA from 1991 to 1998, and served as board secretary from 1993 to 1997.
Ms. Shuey was interested in a career in library science since she was in sixth grade and read an article about the profession. She has belonged to such organizations as the American Library Association, the Texas Library Association, the Dallas County Library Association, and the Southeast Dallas Chamber of Commerce. She also belongs to Kiwanis International, serving in various leadership and organizational positions, including District Secretary. She has been the recipient of numerous Kiwanis awards, including the Walter Zeller Award, the Hixson Award, and life membership in the Past Lieutenant Governors Association. Ms Shuey was honored in the 24th edition of Who's Who in the South and Southwest.
