Mr. Thomas is an American writer and poet who has been involved in the arts producing fiction, non-fiction, plays and performance pieces for various decades. He is the author of the 2013 book A Hard Decision, which gives insight to the families and the lives of those who return home from war, and how the affects can change them forever (www.westleythomas.com). As a fictional book A Hard Decision combines themes of love, war, loss, family, friendship and death, as well as being a tribute to the spirit and strength of every human being. A reading of the book was presented at St. Mark's Church in-the-Bowery, NYC and The BrookIyn Navy Yard in New York at an event honoring veterans from WWIl. In 2014, Mr. Thomas' name was added among those of veterans listed on Building 92's Brooklyn Navy Yard History Museum Tribute Wall.
Before earning a Bachelor's degree in 1980 at the College of Staten Island, City University of New York, Mr. Thomas in 1965 enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He served two tours in Vietnam 1966-1968 and received the following military service awards: The Presidential Unit Citation; Navy Unit Commendation; Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal; National Defense Service Medal; Vietnam Service Medal with three bronze stars; Vietnam Campaign Medal with 60 device; and (2) Rifle Shooting Badges, Expert and Marksman. While serving in Vietnam he was awarded a Letter of Appreciation from the Commanding General for professionalism, devotion to duty, and courage. He was honorably discharged in 1969 as a Sergeant E5, and in 1975-1977 he served in the United States Marine Corps Reserve.
Born in the Bronx, New York, Mr. Thomas currently resides with his wife in Staten Island, New York. Besides writing, he dedicates his time volunteering as an Advocate for Veterans Rights. In 2016 he was awarded a Proclamation from The Council, City of New York, for his outstanding service and enduring contribution to his community and the nation. Senator Diane Savino also awarded a Certificate of Recognition to Mr. Thomas for outstanding service to New York City and State for great contributions to the community and at the same time The Public Advocate for the City of New York awarded him a Certificate in recognition for outstanding service.
