With more than 55 years of professional experience, Dr. Forbes has been an adjunct professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at University of Maryland since 2003. He also has been a Senior Physicist at the Energetics Technology Center since 2006. Prior to obtaining his current role, he was active as a research physicist with the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California from 1996 to 2003, having held the same position with the Naval Surface Warfare Center in Silver Spring, Maryland, from 1963 to 1996. Earlier in his career, Dr. Forbes was a general science teacher with Edison Junior High School from 1962 to 1963.
Beginning his career as a student at Western Illinois University, Dr. Forbes obtained a Bachelor of Science in physics in 1963. Following this accomplishment, he continued his studies, receiving a Master of Science in physics from the University of Maryland in 1967. Concluding his education at Washington State University, Dr. Forbes earned a Doctor of Philosophy in physics in 1976.
A respected voice in his areas of expertise, Dr. Forbes has been active with a number of professional organizations. A fellow of the American Physical Society, he is a member of Sigma Pi Sigma, the Sigma Zeta National Science & Mathematics Honor Society, and Kappa Delta Pi.
Throughout his career, he has been recognized for his achievements with a number of honors accolades and being author of the 2012 Springer text book "Shock Wave Compression in condensed Matter-A Primer."
