Dr. Schwartz, a retired psychologist, devoted more than four decades to the mental health field. First working as a psychotherapist for Albuquerque Child Guidance in 1959 and the Devereux Foundation in Pennsylvania in 1962, she later worked as a program administrator for Jefferson Community Health in Philadelphia, PA, before becoming the director of Ambler Psychological Services in Pennsylvania. Officially retiring in 1991, Dr. Schwartz also spent six years in academia as an assistant professor at the Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University between 1972 and 1978.
Specializing in psychophysiology and biofeedback, Dr. Schwartz has long been an examiner for the Biofeedback Certification Institute of America since 1984. She has also served as an editor for "Biofeedback Society of America Clinical Notes" between 1981 and 1985, has authored numerous works in her field, including "Beyond Time and Space" in 2008 and "Unfolding Universe" in 2014, and was a contributing editor for several encyclopedias and author of numerous scholarly articles.
An elected fellow of the Philadelphia Society of Clinical Psychologists and the American Association for Behavior Therapy and Experimental Psychiatry, Dr. Schwartz is also a past president of the Association for Applied Psychophysiology and Biofeedback and the Pennsylvania Psychological Association. She is a longtime member of multiple other professional organizations as well, including the American Psychological Association, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Greater Philadelphia Society of Clinical Hypnosis and the Pennsylvania Biofeedback Society.
Active as a seminar leader for the National YMCA in Washington, the Stamford Health Agency, the Save-Your-Heart Weekend in Stamford, CT, and the Jefferson Medical Colonel, among others, Dr. Schwartz has also been a board member of the New Mexico Jewish Historical Society since 2012. She formerly served in numerous roles for the Albuquerque Open Space Alliance, the Jewish Community Center in Albuquerque, NM, the Jewish Family Service and Hillel at the University of New Mexico. In 1991, she began serving as a consultant for psychological services in Albuquerque, a role she held until 2001.
Dr. Schwartz has served as President of the Boards of Albuquerque Jewish Family Service and the New Mexico Jewish Historical Society. She was honored with the Alumni Citation Award of the Women's Medical College in 1994, the Lifetime Community Service Award of the Jewish Community Center of Albuquerque in 2015, and the Hurst Award of the New Mexico Jewish Historical Society in 2018.
In retirement she has published two volumes of poetry, Beyond Time and Space, and Unfolding Universe. Her poetry has appeared in Prime Time, New Mexico Link, Voices Israel, and World Poetry 2012.
In 2018 she produced a documentary film, Challah Rising in the Desert: the Jews of New Mexico www.challahrising.com. The film has shown nationally and regionally at film festivals, and in October 2018 on New Mexico Public Broadcasting System, and is scheduled to be shown nationally on PBS in May 2019. She is working on a second film, A Long Journey: the Hidden Jews of the Southwest.
Dr. Schwartz earned a Bachelor of Arts from Antioch College in 1956. She then attended the University of New Mexico, where she completed postgraduate coursework between 1958 and 1962 before going on to earn both a Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy from the Woman's Medical College of Pennsylvania in 1970 and 1972, respectively. Dr. Schwartz is a licensed psychologist in both Pennsylvania and New Mexico and is a diplomate of the American Board of Professional Psychology.
