Supported by more than 55 years of experience, Ms. O'Connell has excelled as the board of trustees' chairperson for the Altman Foundation since 2018. Prior to this appointment, she served as the president and chief executive officer for the organization from 1995 to 2018. She began her career as a teacher for the New York City Board of Education from 1963 to 1964 after securing a Bachelor of Arts from Manhattanville College in Purchase, NY, in 1963. Ms. O'Connell further obtained a Master of Arts from New York University in 1968, subsequently working as an administrator with the Convent of the Sacred Heart in New York City from 1975 to 1998.
In addition to primary career responsibilities, Ms. O'Connell was involved in other career-related endeavors. She consulted for non-profit organizations in the areas of fund raising, strategic planning and board development. From 2000 to 2012, she was a senior consultant with Washburn Carmichael, a full service consulting firm dedicated to non-profit agencies in addition to maintaining a small client base of her own. Civically involved as well, Ms. O'Connell served on the board of directors for City Harvest in New York City, as well as a trustee for the Lavelle Fund for the Blind, the Museum of the City of New York and the Partnership for Inner-City Education. She has also worked as a board member of Governance Matters, a division of the New York Council of Nonprofits, Inc, and the Commonwealth Foundation. She is a member of the Century Association. Ms. O'Connell had many wonderful mentors in the field of education, including Sister Nancy Salisbury RSCJ. She had several more mentors in the field of philanthropy as well, particularly Margaret Mahoney, the late President of the Commonwealth Fund. As a testament to her success, Ms. O'Connell received features in the fifth edition of Who's Who in American Education, as well as the 54th and 55th editions of Who's Who in America.
