Inspired by her father's service in the United States Air Force, Dr. Haywood was commissioned in the Air Force Reserve in 1968, after obtaining a Bachelor of Science from Tufts University in Massachusetts in 1964. She earned a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Colorado. She began her professional career as an intern for the Air Force at the Wilford Hall Air Force Base in San Antonio, TX, from 1968 to 1969. Dr. Haywood continued her career as a resident in pediatrics and anesthesiology at the University of Arizona, Tucson from 1971 to 1974, before progressing to the director of the anesthesiology department at Pima County Hospital in Tucson, AZ from 1975 to 1976.
Dr. Haywood moved with her family to Oklahoma where she became a staff anesthesiologist at South Community Hospital in Oklahoma City in 1977. She furthered excelled with the Norman Regional Moore Hospital in Moore, OK, as a staff anesthesiologist and the chief of anesthesia from 1981 to 1994. After serving in active duty as a Colonel for Operation Enduring Freedom with the Wilford Hall Medical Center at the Lackland Air Force Base in Texas from 2001 to 2002, she focused on her position as an instructor for the department of anesthesia at the University of Oklahoma Health Science Center, a role she has held since 1999. In addition to the aforementioned degrees, Dr. Haywood received a Master of Business Administration from Oklahoma City University in 1993 and completed coursework at Air War College in 1997.
As a member of professional organizations, Dr. Haywood has maintained relationships with the Tufts University Alumni Association and Chi Omega. She has been involved in various civic engagements within her community, serving as the chief of the ethics committee for the Southwest Medical Center in 1996, a member of the medical committee for Planned Parenthood of Oklahoma from 1992 to 1994, and both a member of the board of directors and a treasurer for the North American South Devon Association from 1978 to 1986. Outside of her professional responsibilities, she enjoys skiing and sailing in her spare time. Dr. Haywood has been additionally certified as Lean Six Sigma Black Belt since 2017.
She has four children and 11 grandchildren, one of whom attends MIT and another entering the University of Maryland in this fall.
