Dr. Walsh has been the John H. Hord professor of medicine and physiology emeritus and chairman emeritus of the department of medicine at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH, since 2016. Having lead the Department at the university for nearly two decades beginning in 1998, he was responsible for the development of patient care, as well as research and teaching in the School of Medicine and University Hospitals. Dr. Walsh has also served as the physician-in-chief at the University Hospitals in Cleveland since 1998.
Prior to his tenure at Case Western, Dr. Walsh was the Mabel S. Stonehill professor of medicine and professor of pharmacology and cell biophysics and inaugural Director of the Cardiovascular Center at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, taught medicine in the division of cardiology at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, TX, and was a Pfizer visiting professor at George Washington University in 1995. He also devoted nearly a decade of his career as an associate foundation scientist and foundation scientist for the Southwest Foundation of Biomedical Research between 1979 and 1987 and was a researcher consultant and invited lecturer in his field.
Serving on multiple editorial boards throughout his career, Dr. Walsh has served on the board of "Congestive Heart Failure" since 1995, "Circulation" since 1993, "American Heart Journal" since 1989, and the "American Journal of Cardiology" since 1985. He was also the longtime editor-in-chief of the Journal of Molecular and Cellular Cardiology since 1999 and has authored and co-authored hundreds papers in various peer-reviewed journals.
Dr. Walsh is an elected fellow of the American Physiological Society, the American College of Cardiology, the American Heart Association, where he served in numerous roles, including president, board of directors and vice president of the San Antonio chapter, and the Society for Cardiac Angiography and Interventions. He is also a longstanding member of nearly a dozen other professional organizations, such as the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Federation for Medical Research, the American Society for Clinical Investigation, the Association of American Physicians and the American Society of Hypertension.
Honored with a Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of North Carolina Medical School in 2013, Dr. Walsh received the same award from Georgetown University Medical School in 1997. He was also the recipient of a Robert H. Williams Award from the Association of Professors in Medicine in 2013, the most prestigious award in internal medicine. Presented annually to recognize physicians who have demonstrated outstanding leadership as a chair of a department of internal medicine at a medical school, it is a huge honor. Dr. Walsh has notably been cited in the 55th through 58th editions of Who's Who in America, as well as the second edition of Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare.
Dr. Walsh received a Bachelor of Science in biology, cum laude, from Georgetown University in 1968, followed by a Doctor of Medicine, magna cum laude, in 1972. He then completed an internship and residency at the University of North Carolina between 1972 and 1985. Born in central New Jersey, Dr. Walsh later married his wife Donna Carol Parsons. He has two sons and six grandchildren.
