Dr. S. Robert Ramsey has held the rank of Professor at the University of Maryland since 1988.

With more than 40 years of professional experience, Dr. Ramsey has held the rank of Professor at the University of Maryland since 1988. He previously was a professor of East Asian linguistics with the University of Maryland where he also served as chair of the department of Asian and East European languages and cultures from 1996 to 2015. Prior to obtaining these roles, he was an associate professor with the university from 1984 to 1988. Earlier in his career, he was an assistant professor with Columbia University from 1975 to 1984.
He graduated from Georgia Institute of Technology, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science in civil engineering, in 1966 and then served in the United States Army until 1968. In 1975 he earned a Doctor of Philosophy from Yale University.
A respected voice in his areas of interest, Dr. Ramsey has been affiliated with a number of professional organizations. He is a member of the Linguistic Society of America, the Association of Asian Studies and Tau Beta Pi. He has also served as secretary of the American Association of Teachers of Korean, president of the International Circle of Korean Linguistics, and on the executive committee of the Association for Teachers of Japanese.
Throughout his career, Dr. Ramsey has been recognized for his accomplishments. A frequent scholar and grantee of multiple organizations, he received a Presidential Award and Medal for Contributions to the Korean Language and Culture, which was presented by the former president of the Republic of Korea, Kim Dae Jung. In addition, he received the Precious Crown Medal for Cultural Merit, the highest level of cultural recognition given by the Korean government, and the Ilsuk Award for Academic Achievement, where he was the first non-Korean scholar to be presented with the award. He has also been featured in numerous honors publications, including multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education and Who's Who in the World.
