With over 30 years of professional experience, Ms. Hinman is now retired having most recently worked as a staff analyst for the Orange County Social Service Agency in Sana Ana, CA from 1996 to 1998. Prior to attaining this position she served as executive assistant with the Orange County Board of Supervisors in Santa Ana from 1981 to 1994. Earlier in her career, Ms. Hinman found much success as a teacher for the Billings Public Schools, the Anaheim Union High School District, the Garden Grove Unified School District and the Capistrano Unfired School District.
Alongside he primary endeavors, she has been an active community advocate having been appointed by the Orange County Board of Supervisors to serve on the Dana Point Specific Plan Board of Review and the Dana Point Harbor Youth & Group facility advisory council. Ms. Hinman has been an active twenty-five year advocate for critical water issues particularly emergency preparedness, water quality, reliability, and education programs in schools. She was elected to the South Coast Water District Board of Directors in 1990. She held this position for 10 years before sharing her expertise and being elected to four terms on the Municipal Water District of Orange County Board of Directors from 2000 to 2016.
Prior to embarking on her career, Ms. Hinman earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Montana in Missoula in 1963. Subsequently she graduated with a Master of Public Administration from Californian State University, Long Beach in 1995. To remain up to date in her field she was affiliated with the Association of California Water Agencies, Orange County Water Association and the Water Advisory Committee of Orange County. She remains active in the Dana Point Historical Society, the American Associations of University Women, the Dana Point Civic Association, the Dana Point Chamber of Commerce, Phi Kappa Phi honorary, and Kappa Alpha Theta sorority.
Recognized as Outstanding Citizen of the Year by the Dana Point Chamber of Commerce in 1990, Ms. Hinman was honored as the Woman of Distraction by Capistrano Bay Area Soroptimist International in 1994 and was celebrated as the Founder's Day Honoree by the Dana Point Historical Society in 2008. She was honored with service awards from the Orange County Mental Health Association and the Orange County Mental Health Advisory Board. She was also presented with an Athena Award from the South Orange County Panhellenic Society. Furthermore in 2015 she was honored as the Elected Official of the Year by the Orange County League of Conservation Voters.
Susan Wetzel Hinman is married to Paul Hinman and they have two grown children, David Hinman and Cristine Chopra, and five grandchildren.
