A professor and chair of the department of environmental science and technology at the University of Maryland, Dr. Bowerman has devoted nearly 35 years of his life to ecological studies. He first immersed himself in science and research by earning his Bachelor of Arts in biology from Western Michigan University in 1985, and continued his pursuits in academia by obtaining a Master in Arts in the same field from Northern Michigan University in 1991. Two years later, he graduated with a Doctor of Philosophy with a focus on fisheries and wildlife from Michigan State University.

In his professional affairs, Dr. Bowerman initially served as a science research assistant at the Michigan Legislative Services Bureau in 1986. A year later, he worked in higher government as a biological technician for the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service in 1987. He further built his public career in the Michigan Department of Natural Resources as a wildlife technician in 1988, concurrently with a position assisting in fisheries and wildlife research at the Ohio State University.

Dr. Bowerman subsequently shifted his career track towards scholastic pursuits, holding scientific and professorial positions at a myriad of public universities, including the Ohio State University as a research assistant in 1988, and a similar role at Michigan State University from 1989 to 1993. He later conducting postdoctoral research with Michigan State University until 1994.

Afterward, Dr. Bowerman excelled for a handful of years in leadership roles at environmental institutions, becoming a principal and the chief scientist at Eagle Environmental, Inc. between 1994 and 1995. Following his tenure at Eagle Environmental, he served as the director of the Gale Gleason Environmental Institute from 1996 to 1999. Shifting back towards academia, he worked as an assistant professor at Clemson University in both the department of environmental toxicology and the department of forestry and natural resources until 2011. After departing with a full professorship, he joined the faculty at the University of Maryland, chairing the department of environmental science and technology to this day.

No subject has held Dr. Bowerman's attention quite like the study of eagles, collaborating with international researchers across America, Europe, and Africa to learn more about this majestic species of bird. He focused particularly on preservation and avian diseases. Throughout his career, he has authored close to 100 book chapters and articles for professional journals, many of which centered on eagles.

Likewise, Dr. Bowerman's passion has garnered him numerous awards and recognitions, including the Bald Eagle Research Award in 1987 and the Bald Eagle Person of the Year in 2014, as well as over six million dollars in grants for research into bald eagles and wild life science. He holds membership in multiple scientific societies, such as the Wildlife Society, the World Working Group on Birds of Prey and Owls, the American Ornithological Society, the Ecological Society of America, and Sigma Xi, to name only a few. Dr. Bowerman is married to his wife, Susan Kay Marshall, with whom they have two children, Mary and John.
