With 50 years of professional experience, Dr. Philpott was a visiting research scholar with the department of chemistry at the University of California, Berkeley, from 2005 to 2015 and a visiting researcher with Tohoku University in Japan from 2004 to 2015. Prior to obtaining these roles, he held a number of positions with the National University of Singapore, including professor of materials science from 1999 to 2005, chemistry professor from 1997 to 1999, and materials science department head from 1999 to 2003. Earlier in his career, Dr. Philpott was a research staff member with IBM from 1973 to 1997 and a research associate to associate professor at the University of Oregon from 1965 to 1973. The 24 years with the IBM Research Division were the most productive of his career.
Dr. Philpott began his career as a student at Bristol Grammar School, completing coursework from 1952 to 1958. He then joined the University of London, obtaining a Bachelor of Science in chemistry in 1961. He continued his studies with the university, receiving a Doctor of Philosophy and a Doctor of Science in chemistry in 1964 and 1973, respectively.
A leading voice in his community, Dr. Philpott has been active with a number of professional organizations. The former deputy director of the Institute of Materials Research and Engineering, he is a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, lifetime member of the American Physical Society, emeritus American Chemical Society and a former member of the Electrochemical Society and the Japan Association for the Promotion of Science. Dr. Philpott has contributed nearly 200 articles to scientific journals.
Among his notable achievements, Dr. Philpott is most renowned for his research in theories of excitons in organic materials and surface excited states of crystals, applications of surface Plasmon spectroscopy to chemical phenomena and computer simulations of electric double layers, metal dissolution and graphene nano-patches.
Throughout his career, Dr. Philpott has been recognized for his contributions. An American Physical Society Fellow and Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Fellow, he has been recognized as a Dreyfus Teacher Scholar by the Camille and Henry Dreyfus Foundation, and he received the Williams-Wright Award for Vibrational Spectroscopy from the Coblentz Society. He has been featured in numerous honors publications, including Who's Who in Science and Engineering and Who's Who in the World.
