Dr. Inglehart is a political science professor and program director at the Institute for Social Research of the University of Michigan. Teaching on campus since 1966, he was initially hired as an assistant professor. He later became a full professor in 1977 and has been serving as director since 1984.
In November 2010, Dr. Inglehart co-founded the Laboratory for Comparative Social Research (LCSR) in the Higher School of Economics in Moscow and St. Petersburg, Russia. Established after he and another professor were awarded a mega-grant from the Russian government, the focus of their research was on comparative studies of social change, specifically the analysis of cross-sectional and longitudinal data based on World Values Survey (WVS) data. The LCSR has been the only official partner and representative of the World Values Survey and the European Values Survey in Russia, as well as a partner of the Eurasian monitor. The Laboratory has since been renamed the Ronald Inglehart Laboratory for Comparative Social Research in 2017. Dr. Inglehart was also responsible for helping found Euro-Barometer Surveys in Brussels, Belgium, in 1974 and was the founding president of the World Values Survey Association, headquartered in Stockholm, Sweden, in 1988.
Dr. Inglehart is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the American Academy of Political and Social Science. He is a longstanding member of the International Society of Political Psychology, the International Political Science Association, the American Political Science Association and the Midwest Political Science Association.
A visiting professor at numerous institutions around the globe, Dr. Inglehart has taught at the University of Mannheim and Free University in Germany, the University of Kyoto and University of Kobe in Japan, and the Federal University of Minas Gerais and the University of Brasilia in Brazil, among others. He has been serving on the advisory council for the Berlin Science Center since 1992 and the Center for Political Studies in Ann Arbor, MI, since 1995. He also recently presented a lecture, "The Rise of Trump and the Xenophobic Populist Parties," at the University of Toronto Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy in September 2018.
Writing extensively in his field, Dr. Inglehart has published more than 300 publications in various scholarly and professional journals, as well as several books. He has two publications debuting soon, "Cultural Backlash: Trump, Brexit, and Authoritarianism Populism" through Cambridge University Press and "Democratization" through Oxford University Press, second edition. Dr. Inglehart has served on the editorial board for eight scholarly journals during his career as well.
Dr. Inglehart received the Johan Skytte Prize in Political Science in 2011. The prize is often considered the highest prize awarded in the field of political science. Three years later, in 2014, he was the recipient of a Dinerman Award from the World Association for Public Opinion Research. Dr. Inglehart was named an Amy and Alan Lowenstein Professor in Democracy by the Democratization and Human Rights and has since been cited in approximately a dozen editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in American Politics, Who's Who in the Midwest and Who's Who in the World.
Earning a Bachelor of Arts from Northwestern University in 1956, Dr. Inglehart soon after completed both a Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Chicago in 1962 and 1967, respectively. He notably received an honorary Doctor of Theology from Uppsala University in Sweden in 2006, an honorary Doctor of Philosophy from Free University of Brussels in 2010 and an honorary Doctor of Philosophy from Leuphana University of Lüneburg in Germany in 2012. He served as a private in the U.S. Army between 1957 and 1959.
