Supported by nearly five decades of professional excellence in English and academia, Dr. Guibbory is an English professor with Barnard College, where she has worked since 2005. Earlier in her career, she served the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign as an assistant professor, associate professor and professor between 1970 and 2005. She was a visiting professor in 2003 at Barnard College prior to her position as a tenured full professor. Although her career has been filled with highlights, she is especially proud of writing a number of books, including "The Map of Time" (1986), "Ceremony and Community from Herbert to Milton" (1998), and "Christian Identity, Jews and Israel in Seventeenth-Century England" (2010), as well as editing "The Cambridge Companion to John Donne" (2006)
An expert in her field, Dr. Guibbory received a Bachelor of Arts from Indiana University in 1966, and a Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy from the University of California, Los Angeles, in 1967 and 1970, respectively. she maintains affiliation with the Modern Language Association, serving on the executive committee of the 17th century English literature division, the John Donne Society, in which she has been vice president and president, and the Milton Society of America, where she has been an executive committee member, vice president and president.
In light of her outstanding work, Dr. Guibbory won a Prokasky Teaching Award, a Luckman Teaching Award and a Campus Undergraduate Teaching Award from the University of Illinois, and she also received fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation. In 2010, she notably received an honorary doctorate from Iona College. She won the Distinguished Publication Award from the John Donne Society in 1992, 1994 and 2019. She was named Honored Milton Scholar by the Milton Society of America in 2018. Looking toward the future, Dr. Guibbory intends to continue teaching, doing research and writing at Barnard College.
