Dr. Crutchfield most recently served as a distinguished professor in the department of physical therapy at Georgia State University in Atlanta, previously working as a professor and director of graduate studies. She began her professional career as a staff therapist at the Wilson Workforce and Rehabilitation Center in Fishersville, Virginia, in 1966, remaining in this position for one year before becoming the director of a now closed children's rehabilitation center in Harrisonburg, Virginia. She then went on to serve as a staff therapist at West Virginia University Hospital in Morgantown from 1968 to 1970. Joining the School of Medicine at West Virginia University as an assistant professor and assistant director of the department of physical therapy from 1970 to 1975, Dr. Crutchfield moving up the ranks to associate professor and director from 1975 to 1978 and professor and acting chair from 1978 to 1980.
In addition to this tenure, Dr. Crutchfield served as secretary of the Society for Behavioral Kinesiology from 1977 to 1979 and was on the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties in Alexandria, Virginia, from 1978 to 1990, and joined the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties in Alexandria, Virginia from 1978-1990 serving as a two-time chair as well. During this time, she was the chairman of the neurology section of the American Physical Therapy Association from 1983 to 1985, also serving as editor and member on the finance committee. Dr. Crutchfield's mother was inflicted with an unknown neurological issue early in her childhood and she always wondered what it was, which is what helped her make her career choice. She chose the direction of physical therapy education because she felt that by training students, she could help many more people.
Prior to embarking on her professional path, Dr. Crutchfield earned a Bachelor of Arts from Western Colorado University in 1964 and a certificate of physical therapy from Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, the following year. She continued her studies at West Virginia University, where she obtained a Master of Science in anatomy in 1970 and a Doctor of Education in 1976. Dr. Crutchfield is also a licensed physical therapist in the states of North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia and Georgia.
Active in her local community, Dr. Crutchfield chaired the ushers at North Decatur Presbyterian Church in Georgia in 1990 and volunteered in the Goodwill book department from 1995 to 2000. Additionally, she has served as co-treasurer of the North Decatur Presbyterian Church since 1991 and volunteered with the Atlanta Intown Food Pantry since 2016. A prolific writer, she has authored six books, "Patient at Home" in 1970, "The Muscle Spindle" in 1972, "Reflexes in Motor Development" in 1978, "Peripheral Components of Motor Control" in 1984, "Reflex and Vestibular Aspects of Motor Control, Motor Learning, Motor Development" in 1990, and "Motor Control and Motor Learning in Rehabilitation" in 1993. Dr. Crutchfield has also contributed many chapters to books as well as articles to professional journals.
In an effort to remain up to date with developments in her field, Dr. Crutchfield has maintained affiliation with a number of professional organizations. A longstanding member of the American Physical Therapy Association, she served as the treasurer from 1989 to 1992 and was president of the West Virginia chapter from 1978 to 1979. Likewise, Dr. Crutchfield was an active member of the Association of Clinical Electrophysiology from 1973 to 2002.
In light of her exceptional undertakings, Dr. Crutchfield received several awards from the American Physical Therapy Association. Presented with the Baethke-Carlin Award for Teaching in 1984, she was also recognized with the Lucy Blair Service Award in 1986, the Catherine Worthingham Fellowship in 1996, and the Anniversary Award in 2002. Most recently the neurology section of the American Physical Therapy Association honored her with a Founder's Award in 2018. Dr. Crutchfield has also been the recipient multiple awards from Georgia State University for her achievements.
