Supported by more than 50 years of practiced experience in history and higher education, Dr. Fitzgerald has been serving as an independent decorative arts consultant since 1979 and as adjunct professor in the History of Decorative Arts and Design Masters program since 1995 at the Smithsonian Institution now in partnership with George Washington University, Washington, DC. A former visiting professor at Marymount University for nearly three decades, he also excelled at the Navy Museum in Washington, DC, as the director from 1994 to 1995 and as curator from 1979 to 1985. Dr. Fitzgerald began his career as a historian for the Naval Historical Center in 1966, holding the role for 13 years.
Alongside his primary appointments, Dr. Fitzgerald worked as the first chairman of the Historical Alexandria Resources Commission from 1982 to 1986 and participated on the boards of the Historical Alexandria Foundation and the Alexandria Architectural Review between 1988 and 2003. Since 2007, he has found success as the vice chairman of the Alexandria Library Board and chairman of the Friends of the Carlyle House. A contributor of articles to professional journals, he has also authored myriad books pertaining to Alexandria history and furniture, such as "American Furniture: 1650 to the Present" in 2018 and "New Masters of the Wooden Box" in 2009. Dr. Fitzgerald additionally co-authored the first two volumes of "U.S. Navy and the Vietnam Conflict," published in 1976 and 1986, respectively.
The recipient of the 1982 Alexandria Association Achievement Award, Dr. Fitzgerald also accepted the 2000 Walter Mess Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority Award. Likewise, he was featured in multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the East and Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America. Previously, Dr. Fitzgerald earned a Bachelor of Arts from Vanderbilt University in 1965, as well as a Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy from Georgetown University in 1968 and 1971, respectively.
