Prior to the start of her career, Dr. Rideout attended Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Massachusetts, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1961 and a Master of Arts in 1963. Soon thereafter, she graduated from the University at Buffalo in New York with a Doctor of Philosophy in 1968, and commenced her career as a research chemist in the experimental therapy department with Burroughs Wellcome Co., from 1968 to 1970. Dr. Rideout excelled with the company, serving in the roles of senior research chemist, group leader for the experimental therapy and organic chemistry departments and assistant director and associate director from 1970 until her departure in 1994.
Furthermore, Dr. Rideout found success with Inspire Pharmaceuticals Inc., in Durham, North Carolina, from 1995 to 2002, where she worked as the director of the chemical department as well as a senior director and vice president of the discovery department. In a career filled with achievements, she is proud to have been the co-inventor of the retroviral medication AZT, which was the first drug used to successfully treat HIV. A testament to her success, Dr. Rideout has been the recipient of a Distinguished Chemist Award from the North Carolina Institute of Chemists and a Distinguished Alumni Award and the College of Arts and Sciences Dean's Award from the University at Buffalo as well as a Dupont Study Grant and fellowships with the Allied Corp. and the B. F. Skinner Foundation.
A member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Dr. Rideout also maintains affiliation with the American Chemical Society and the American Institute of Chemists. An expert in the field, she has contributed her expertise as an editor for the publication, "Nucleosides, Nucleotides and Their Biological Applications" written in 1983. Outside of work, Dr. Rideout enjoys reading, painting, sports and financial investing in her spare time.
