An expert in metabolism and the function of vitamin D, Dr. Fraser has been recognized as an emeritus professor of animal science with the University of Sydney since 2007, previously serving the university as a professor of animal science from 1986 to 2007 and dean of veterinary science from 1994 to 1998. He began his career as a teaching fellow in the university's department of biochemistry in 1963, holding this position for two years before joining the scientific staff of the U.K. medical research council at Dunn Nutritional Laboratory, now the MRC Mitochondrial Biology Unit, in Cambridge, England, from 1967 to 1974. Dr. Fraser progressed through the ranks to be appointed member unlimited in 1974 and senior grade scientific staff in 1981.

In addition to this tenure, Dr. Fraser has lectured both internally and externally at the University of Cambridge and the University of Birmingham, and was a fellow of Darwin College in Cambridge, England, in 1985 and the Food Standards Australia New Zealand in 2011. He also served as an examiner of Medical Science Tripos students at the University of Cambridge from 1982 to 1984. While working at the University of Sydney, Dr. Fraser went above and beyond his teaching duties to serve in a number of other key roles such as occasional acting dean and pro-dean of the veterinary science faculty, director of the dairy and poultry research foundations, head of the department of animal science, and a member on various committees including the research and scholarship committee.

Prior to embarking on his professional path, Dr. Fraser earned the school certificate from Hutt Valley High School in Lower Hutt, New Zealand, in 1955 and matriculated from North Sydney Boys High School in 1957. He pursued a formal education at the University of Sydney, where he received a Bachelor of veterinary science with first class honors in 1962. Following this accomplishment, he went on to attend Clare College at the University of Cambridge in England, obtaining a Doctor of Philosophy in 1967. Becoming involved in his career out of a desire to help solve problems of disease in animals and humans, Dr. Fraser considers the highlight of his career to be discoveries he made through biomedical research that advanced knowledge with a practical benefit for human and animal health.

A prolific writer, Dr. Fraser has contributed multiple articles to professional journals in his field. He has served on the editorial boards for the British Journal of Nutrition from 1982 to 1986 and 2000 to 2007, Encyclopedia Britannica from 1991 to 1999, and the Central Journal for Veterinary Medicine from 1992 to 1997. Additionally, Dr. Fraser was an editorial adviser for the Biochemical Journal from 1980 to 1999 and edited the symposium proceedings for the Biochemical Society Special Publication in 1973.

Outside of his primary trade, Dr. Fraser has kept updated of trends in his field through his affiliations with numerous related organizations. He was the scientific secretary for the ARC/MRC committee of the Working Party on Accessory Food Factors and Minerals and the joint committee on food and nutrition research of the UK Agricultural Research Council and Medical Research Council from 1971 to 1974. Likewise, he was the symposium convener for the lipid group of the Biochemical Society at King's College London and for the first European Nutrition Conference of Churchill College in 1973. Furthermore, Dr. Fraser has also been involved with the International Union of Nutritional Sciences, the International Conferences on Calcium Regulating Hormones, the Bone and Tooth Society, the Triennial Sydney Bone Symposium, and the Australia and New Zealand Bone and Mineral Society, among others.

In light of his exceptional undertakings, Dr. Fraser was awarded a Commonwealth of Australia Scholarship at the University of Sydney between 1958 and 1962 and the British Commonwealth Scholarship at the University of Cambridge between 1964 and 1967. A grantee in his field, the University of Sydney has also bestowed him with various other accolades when a veterinary science student, including the Stewart Prize for Veterinary Medicine, the S.T.D. Symons Prize for Clinical Subjects, the J.D. Stewart Essay Prize, the Graziers Association Prize for Animal Breeding, the J. Moran Prize for Meat Inspection, the Cooper Prize for Parasitology, the H.C. Moulder Prize for Bacteriology and the University Medal. Moreover, Dr. Fraser received the Chevalier de l'Ordre du Sacavin from the European Symposium on Calcified Tissues in Angers, France, in 1984 and the Rank International Prize in Nutrition in 1988, and was made a member of the general division of the Order of Australia in 2015.
