Supported by more than 45 years of practiced experience in education, Dr. Stevos has excelled as an adjunct faculty member at Rhode Island College since 2005, having previously served in the role from 1997 to 1999. In addition to this position, she worked for the Providence Public School District as the director of strategic planning and professional development from 1992 to 2002 as well as the director of program and staff development, a supervisor of social studies, the head of the department of social studies and a teacher. Dr. Stevos was also active as a member of the adjunct faculty of Salve Regina University between 2003 and 2005.
A certified teacher, principal and superintendent in the state of Rhode Island, Dr. Stevos is a frequent consultant in the field and has been appointed to numerous committees regarding history education at multiple educational institutions across Rhode Island and in other U.S. states. Most recently, she participated on the conference planning committee for Next Steps: A Place-Based Approach to Teaching African-American History in Rhode Island Classrooms in 2018. As a consultant, Dr. Stevos established the Trinity Academy for the Performing Arts Charter School from an idea to a reality. She is also involved with the Learning Research and Development Center at the University of Pittsburgh, the Rhode Island School of Design, and the U.S. Department of Education. She was also a member of the Accreditation Committee of the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) for Cumberland High School and Mt. Hope High School. On a civic level, Dr. Stevos has held the posts of trustee of the Rhode Island College Foundation and a member of the board of directors of the Rhode Island Heritage Hall of Fame and the Heritage Harbor Foundation.
Furthermore, Dr. Stevos maintains her affiliation with the National Conference for Community and Justice, the Daughters of the American Revolution, and the National Council for the Social Studies, where she has contributed on the Carter G. Woodson Book Award committee. She is also a member of the National Social Studies Supervisors Association, the Rhode Island Black Heritage Society and several honor societies. Moreover, Dr. Stevos holds a Master of Education from Rhode Island College earned in 1997 and Doctor of Philosophy, earned through a joint doctoral program in education of the University of Rhode Island and Rhode Island College in 2005.
As a testament to her success, Dr. Stevos has garnered several accolades and honors. The recipient of the Living the Dream Award from the Martin Luther King Jr. State Commission in 2019, she has been presented with the All Kids Award from the Urban Collaborative Accelerated Program, the Distinguished Alumni Award from Classical High School, the Big Brothers, Big Sisters of the Ocean State Legacy Award, and the Northern YWCA Woman of Achievement Award. Earlier in her career, she accepted the George T. Downing Award for Education from the Rhode Island Black Heritage Society, the National Educator Award from the Milken Family Foundation, the Education Award from the Providence chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and the Community Service Award from the John Hope Settlement House. In 1983, Dr. Stevos was celebrated with the Never Again Award from the Jewish Federation of Rhode Island.
