After receiving a diploma in petroleum engineering from the Colorado School of Mines in 1960, Mr. Smith began his career with the Shell Oil Company in Denver, CO as a drilling engineer. He later excelled as a drilling superintendent and an operations manager with the aforementioned company. Moreover, Mr. Smith found success as the manager of drilling for the Shell Oil Company in Houston, TX from 1982 to 1998.
In addition to his primary responsibilities, Mr. Smith served as the project manager for the Chukchi Sea Exploration Project between 1988 to 1991, as well as the Mississippi Sour Gas Blowout in 1969 and the deep water pioneer drilling and production for the Gulf of Mexico from 1976 to 1997. From 1961 to 1964, he completed active service in the United States Army. Mr. Smith later served in the U.S. Army Reserves between 1964 and 1968. Following retirement from Shell, Mr. Smith continued to work in the industry until 2013.
A registered professional engineer, Mr. Smith was a member of the American Petroleum Institute, the Society of Petroleum Engineers and the International Association of Drilling Contractors. A testament to his achievements in the field, he was inducted into the Colorado School of Mines Football Hall of Fame in 1958.
