A leading expert in head and neck imaging, Dr. Rao graduated from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, a premier medical school in New Delhi, India. She immigrated to the United States in 1974 and completed a diagnostic radiology residency from 1975 to 1978 at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, Philadelphia. Subsequently, she earned a certification in diagnostic radiology through the American Board of Radiology and a Certificate of Added Qualification in Neuroradiology. She has medical licensure in the state of Pennsylvania.
Dr. Rao has excelled as the David C. Levin professor and chair of radiology in the department of radiology at the Jefferson Medical College and Thomas Jefferson University Hospitals since 2002 and now at the Sidney Kimmel Medical College. Jefferson Medical College was named Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University in 2014. Notably, she was the first female chair of a clinical department in the Jefferson Medical College's history.
Additionally, Dr. Rao has found success as the senior vice president and chair of Enterprise Radiology and Imaging Jefferson Health in Philadelphia, PA, since 2016. During her tenure at Thomas Jefferson University, she worked in the department of radiology as the vice chair of education from 2000 to 2002, associate chair of education from 1989 to 2000, and co-director of the division of neuroradiology/ENT from 1986 to 2002. During the same time, she acted as the director of the radiology residency program at Jefferson Medical College and director of medical student education in the department of radiology.
Outside of her administrative appointments, Dr. Rao has dedicated many years to professorial roles. Currently, she is a professor of radiology and professor of otolaryngology/head and neck surgery at the Jefferson Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University and now at the Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University, roles she has held since 1989.
An active presence in the field, Dr. Rao has held a number of leadership positions within such prestigious organizations as the Academy for Radiology and Biomedical Imaging Research, the Association of Program Directors in Radiology, the American Society of Head and Neck Radiology, the Radiological Society of North America and the American Association of Women Radiologists. She also served on various committees with the American Society of Neuroradiology, the Association of University Radiologists, the Society of Chairs of Academic Radiology Departments and the American College of Radiology.
Dr. Rao is past president of the Radiological Society of North America, the American Society of Head and Neck Radiology, the Association of Program Directors in Radiology and the American Association of Women Radiologists. She currently serves on the RSNA R&E Foundation Board and Academy of Radiology Board.
In addition, she has been involved in many editorial activities, including reviewing and moderating meetings for organizations. She has also received many research grants. A trusted voice in the field, she has written 230 articles for publication in peer-reviewed journals, including "Coronary CT Angiography: Reversal of Earlier Utilization Trends" in 2019 and "The Percent Share of all Medical Payments to Physicians that is Attributable to Noninvasive Diagnostic Imaging" in 2018. She has also written 11 book chapters and a book titled "MRI and CT Atlas of Correlative Imaging in Otolaryngology," which was published in 1992. Furthermore, she has published 275 abstracts, given 75 scientific presentations, 24 scientific exhibits, and 232 invited lectures.
In light of her professional achievements as an educator, mentor and distinguished service to the field of radiology, Dr. Rao has gained recognition in the form of numerous awards and accolades. In 2006, she received the Achievement Award of the Association of Program Directors for her outstanding contributions to radiology education nationally. In 2010, she received the Distinguished Radiologist Award from the American Association of Radiologists of Indian Origin for her contributions to radiology and for being an inspiring role model. In 2014, she received the Gold Medal Award from the Association of University Radiologists and she received the Marie Curie Award from the American Association for Women Radiologists.
Moreover, in 2017, she received honorary membership of the Israel Society of Radiology. In 2018, she received the Gold Medal from the Asian Oceanian Society of Radiology for her outstanding contributions to international radiology and a Medal of Honor and honorary membership from the French Society of Radiology. In February 2019, she received honorary membership with the European Society of Radiology. She has been selected her peers compiled by Castle Connolly Medical Ltd. for inclusion on the Philadelphia Magazine's annual list of Top Doctors, America's Top Doctors for Cancer, and Best Doctors for several consecutive years since for a cumulative of over 50 awards.
