Washington NM, Cape Hatteras National Seashore within the National Park Service. Following these and other appointments, Dr. Lusk found success as Park Superintendent of Wolf Trap Farm Park, Appomattox Court House, Valley Forge National Historical Park, Big Bend National Park, Glacier National Park and the Albright Training Center at the Grand Canyon National Park where he also served as NPS Director of Training and Employee Development.
His work in the National Park Service in new areas and in developing shared park concepts with Canada and Mexico resulted in receiving the Department of the Interior's second highest honor award, the Meritorious Service Award in 1986 and the Department's highest honor award, the Distinguished Service Award in 1998. In 2001 he was honored with presentation of an honorary Ph.D. from his alma mater, Gettysburg College in PA for his decades of public service.
After retiring from the park service in 1997, Dr. Lusk accepted the post of a co-administrator of the Lusk Surname DNA Project. He subsequently worked as the Chairman of Gil Lusk Associates and Managing Partner of the Cholla Group, LLC, organized to try and develop a new concept for ranch operations and ownership. Throughout his career, Dr. Lusk provided his considerable knowledge and experience in essays and books including "Considered Opinions" and "National Parks, Our Living National Treasures, A Time for Concern," which was published in 2019.
For his impressive professional accomplishments, Dr. Lusk has been recognized many times, having been presented with the Exemplary Public Service award from the Montana Nature Conservancy in 1993, and the Distinguished Public Official Award from the Arizona chapter of the American Planning Association in 2014. Likewise, Dr. Lusk has been featured in multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the World and Who's Who in the West. Looking into the future, Dr. Lusk intends to pursue improvements and changes within the National Park Service.
