Dr. Christopher C. Mathewson has been a Regents' Professor Emeritus in the department of geology and geophysics at Texas A&M University since 2011.

Dr. Mathewson has been a Regents' Professor Emeritus in the department of geology and geophysics at Texas A&M University since 2011. Joining the faculty in 1971, he taught engineering geology and was a senior professor, director of the Center for Engineering Geosciences and the Center for Applied Geosciences, and a leader of the Engineering Geosciences Research Program. During his tenure at Texas A&M University, Dr. Mathewson was a member of the faculty senate, the sustainability and environmental management committee, and the Aggie Honor council, chaired the graduate appeals panel and was an academic mentor for the university's Corps of Cadets. In 2012, he became a senior training specialist for the Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service.
As an engineer and geologist, Dr. Mathewson has served as both a consultant and speaker in his field. He was the facility manager/engineer and building proctor for the Michael T. Halbouty Geoscience Building for 26 years beginning in 1980 and chaired the College Station Planning and Zoning Commission for eight years beginning in 1973. He continues to serve as a member of the council of examiners for the National Association of State Boards of Geology since 1994.
Dr. Mathewson has written extensively in his field. Contributing multiple articles to various professional journals, he also served as an editor for several works, including "Interdisciplinary Workshop on the Physical-Chemical-Biological Processes Affecting Archaeological Sites," which was published by the Department of the Army with the U.S. Army Engineers. He also edited "Rock Mechanics: Theory-Experiment-Practice" through Texas A&M University. He served as Editor of the Bulletin of the Association of Engineering Geologists from 1981 to 1987.
A longstanding member of multiple organizations, Dr. Mathewson has been active with the American Association of Petroleum Geologists, the American Geophysical Union, the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers, the American Institute of Professional Geologists and the American Society of Civil Engineers, among many others. He is a former trustee of the Geological Society of America Foundation and a past president of the American Geological Institute and the Association of Environmental and Engineering Geologists.
Honored multiple times for his work, Dr. Mathewson received the Charles R. Sherman Award from the National Association of State Boards of Geology in 2011, the Karl and Ruth Terzaghi Outstanding Mentor Award from the Association of Environmental and Engineering Geologists in 2008 and the Pete Henley Mentor Award from the Texas section of the Association of Environmental and Engineering Geologists in 2007, and the James Hutton Lifetime Service Award in 2019. A Christopher C. Mathewson Scholarship for Geology was also established in his honor in 2011. Dr. Mathewson has notably been included in dozens of editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Finance and Business, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the South and Southwest, and Who's Who in the World.
Growing up on a tree farm in northern New Jersey, Dr. Mathewson's father was an engineer who owned his own company. Desiring to follow in his father's footsteps by becoming a civil engineer so that he could build houses, he attended college, acquired his degree in civil engineering and soon after applied for graduate school. Taking several courses in geology, it led Dr. Mathewson to then study geological engineering. Applying for a commission in the U.S. and Coast Geodetic Survey and then earning his doctorate degree, it was then that he realized that he really wanted to teach applied geoscience.
Dr. Mathewson received a Bachelor of Science in civil engineering from Case Institute of Technology in 1963 and a Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy in geological engineering from the University of Arizona in 1965 and 1974, respectively. He also served as a commissioned officer and lieutenant with NOAA's Environmental Services Administration (ESSA), now the National Ocean Survey, between 1966 and 1970. Dr. Mathewson is a registered professional engineer in Texas, licensed professional geoscientist in Texas, registered professional geological engineer in Arizona, registered professional engineering geologist in Oregon and licensed geologist in Alaska. He is also a certified professional geologist through the American Institute of Professional Geologists, is certified in industrial drilling fluids, certified in industrial firefighting and is a licensed commercial pilot of single engine, land aircraft.
