Celebrating more than three decades as a dedicated professional in biological science, Dr. Smith was initially inspired to seek his chosen career path after taking a course in embryology, which made him consider DNA in a philosophical way as opposed to the scientific interpretation. He believed that studying DNA would reveal insights about the origins and history of the human species, as well as the relationships between different species. Throughout his career, he has excelled in a variety of positions such as a biochemist, a molecular biologist, the director of health research, and the director of health and life science. Dedicating much of his career to his exemplary work with the health and life science division of the U.S. Department of Energy, Dr. Smith retired from full-time professional activity in 1999.
An influential scientist, Dr. Smith is proud to have been one of the founders of the Human Genome Project, which has had enormous financial and scientific implications throughout the world. He has also contributed to his field through numerous articles written in professional journals. Beyond his primary responsibilities, Dr. Smith remains active by studying cosmology, military history and finance management.
Prior to embarking upon his professional path, Dr. Smith earned a Bachelor of Arts from Dana College and a Doctor of Philosophy in biochemistry from the University of Southern California. He was also presented with the Henry Deuel Award in Biochemistry from the University of Southern California alongside his PhD. Dr. Smith received the Distinguished Career Service Award from the U.S. Department of Energy, and the Distinguished Alumni Award from Dana College. Prior to his retirement, Dr. Smith was affiliated with the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Chemical Society, and the American Society of Biochemists and Molecular Biologists.
