He interned at the Columbia Medical Division at Bellevue Hospital and served as a lieutenant commander in the U.S. Public Health Service in Washington DC. Major highlights of his career include establishing and developing the Margaret M. Dyson Vision Research Institute at Weill Cornell Medical College as well as leading a team in the development of ultrasound imaging of the eye and its related instrumentation.
Dr. Coleman received a Bachelor of Science from Union College and his MD with thesis honors from the University of Buffalo. He maintains affiliation with the American College of Surgeons, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine, the Retina Society, Club Jules Gonin (the International Retina Society), and the World Federation of Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology, among many others. Dr. Coleman coauthored "Ultrasonography of the Eye and Orbit", now in its second addition, as well as more than 250 articles and chapters in medical journals and textbooks.
For his outstanding contributions to his field, Dr. Coleman has received many prestigious awards including the Mildred M. Weisenfeld Award for Excellence in Ophthalmology from the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, the Herman Wacker Award of Club Jules Gonin, the Award of Merit in Retinal Research from the Retina Society, and the BIetti Award from the Italian Ophthalmological Society, as well as an honorary degree from the University of Ferrara in Ferrara, Italy. Additionally, he was the 2001 recipient of the Greenberg Award of New York-Presbyterian Hospital-Weill Medical College of Cornell University. Publications such as Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the East, Who's Who in the World, Who's Who in American Education and Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare have also recognized him for his work.
