After obtaining a Bachelor of Arts from Saint Catherine University in 1974, she began her career as a nurse with Divine Redeemer Hospital in Saint Paul, MN, between 1974 and 1975. Subsequently, she worked in the same position at Saint Joseph's Hospital from 1975 to 1976, before accepting the role of a certified nurse midwife for the Family Tree Clinic in Saint Paul, MN, between 1978 and 1987. During this time, Ms. McCleary graduated with a Master of Science from the University of Minnesota in 1978.
Ms. McCleary continued to find success as a pre-term birth instructor for Group Health Incorporated in Saint Paul from 1988 to 1992, while simultaneously remaining active as a certified nurse midwife for Health Partners in Saint Paul from 1976 until her retirement in 2016. In addition to her primary responsibilities, she served as an adjunct clinical instructor for the University of Minnesota from 1978 to 2016, as well as a clinical instructor for Frontier Nursing Services in Hayden, KY between 1985 and 1989. Moreover, Ms. McCleary was affiliated with the American College of Nurse Midwives as a chapter vice chairman from 1986 to 1988.
For her accomplishments in the field, Ms. McCleary has been selected for inclusion in the editions of Who's Who in American Nursing, Who's Who in the Midwest, Who's Who of American Women and Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America. In a career filled with highlights, she is most proud to have provided inspiration to a woman who eventually sought help for her depression, which prompted the woman to turn her life around, adopt a child and later get married. Ms. McCleary touched this woman's life without directly working with her, which she credits to the power of listening.
