Now a distinguished professor emeritus of medicine, Dr. Newcom celebrates a career in health care and education that has spanned more than 40 years. Aligned with Emory University in Atlanta since 1984, he previously helmed the department of medical oncology at Oregon Health Science University (OHSU) in Portland and acted as an instructor of medicine at the University of Oregon. Additionally, Dr. Newcom was a medical oncologist and hematologist at the Portland Clinic and an assistant professor and chief of the medical oncology clinic at the University of California. He also lent his expertise to Grady Memorial Hospital as chief of leukemia services and Atlanta Veteran Affairs Hospital as chief of hematology/oncology services.
Dr. Newcom is a seasoned research scientist and civic activist. In fact, he played a notable role in the inception and establishment of the Oregon Physician Assisted Suicide Law, which ultimately led to the development of the Oregon Cancer Center and the Knight Cancer Center at OHSU. Further, he was credited with organizing movements to obtain public funding for Grady Memorial Hospital and he received U.S. congressional support for the passage and implementation of the Affordable Care Act in Georgia.
Dr. Newcom's scholarly efforts include the contribution of multiple articles to renowned journals. He was the editor of "Supplemental 5 Blood" and "Hematologic Malignancies in the Adult," and was the assistant editor of the American Journal of Medical Science. His research includes the characterization of the Reed-Sternberg cell in Hodgkin's as a malignant lymphocyte. He also demonstrated the attempt by T-lymphocytes to kill the Reed-Sternberg cell and identified proteins inhibiting these T-cells.
An alumnus of the University of California, Dr. Newcom holds a bachelor's degree. He later attended the University of Southern California where he earned a medical degree. Additional educational pursuits include the completion of an internship and a position as senior assistant surgeon for the U.S. Public Health Service in Staten Island, New York, followed by a residency at the University of Southern California and fellowship at the University of California. Dr. Newcom is board certified in internal medicine, hematology, and medical oncology.
An elected fellow of the American College of Physicians, Dr. Newcom was also a fellow of the American Cancer Society from 1980 to 1983. He is a longstanding member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the American Association of Cancer Research, the American Society of Hematology, the American Federation of Clinical Research, and the Southern Society Clinical Investigation. Dr. Newcom secured a number of grants from the American Cancer Society, the M.J. Murdoc Trust, and the National Institutes of Health between 1980 and 1990. A celebrated Marquis listee, he has been featured in the 24th and 25th editions of Who's Who in the South and Southwest, the 20th edition of Who's Who in the West, and the first edition of Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America.
