Accruing some 35 years of industry and military experience to his credit, Dr. Sample has been recognized as Professor Emeritus of Shenandoah University in Winchester, Virginia. He served as the Chairman/Executive on many organizations at Shenandoah, as well as serving as Professor of Organizational Behavior for 21 years (1989-2010). Dr. Sample served as Faculty Athletics Representative as well as Executive Director of the Government and Public Affairs Committee. He was initially hired to start a campus in Leesburg, which was highly successful, and chaired the Department of Management and Marketing.
Prior to joining Shenandoah University, he went into the Air Force, and was privileged and blessed to serve 26 years active duty as a United States Air Force officer, retiring as full Colonel. After training at numerous Air Force bases where he excelled academically, mentally and physically, his first permanent assignment was 5 years with General Electric Corp. He then went through extensive training controlling the U-2 aircraft over China out of Ta Kang Shan, Taiwan. After that year, he attended the Defense Intelligence College for a year and then was blessed to go through extensive air combat training at the Air Force Survival School in Northern Idaho, and Jungle Survival in Northern Luzon, Philippines. He then served another year, flying out of Korat, Thailand on night missions over Ho Chi Minh Trail, Vietnam. Returning to America, he was assigned to the Pentagon for 5 years. He then was privileged to attend the Industrial College of the Armed Forces (ICAF) for a year and then served in the White House for a year. He finished his 26 years of service at the Defense Intelligence Agency, Fort McNair, Washington, D.C. Highly decorated, he was awarded many Medals and Certificates, including the Legion of Merit, the Meritorious Service Medal, and the Air Medal; first and second Oak Leaf Cluster.
Prior to embarking on his professional path, Dr. Sample, a native of Shelbyville, Texas, pursued a formal education at the University of Houston, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in psychology. He earned a Master's degree in Government at Southern Illinois University and a Doctorate in Public Administration at the University of Southern California.
Active in his local community, Dr. Sample is a parishioner and former vestry member of St. James Episcopal Church in Leesburg, as well as a former member of the Oatlands Historic Property Foundation and the Conversations at Oakland. A former member of the Leesburg Economic Development Commission, he has served in a variety of positions with numerous organizations all over Loudoun County, Virginia. He is the former President of the Loudoun Library Foundation and has been active with the Vietnam Memorial Committee of Loudoun County, the Waterford Foundation, and the Commission on the Western Bypass. He also was privileged to serve on the Board of the Washington, D.C. Airports Authority. Dr. Sample was blessed to serve as the former head coach and Board member for the Central Loudoun County Little League, among other roles. Dr. Sample served four years on the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors.
Dr. Sample keeps updated on trends in his areas of interest through affiliations with numerous related organizations. He is a Life Member of the Air Force Association, the Association of ICAF, and Vietnam Veterans of America. He has maintained involvement with the American Society for Public Administration, the National Trust for Historic Preservation, Keep Loudoun Beautiful, the Josephson Institute of Ethics and the American Legion, among others. Now in retirement, he resides in Leesburg, VA, close to his two children, Andrew and Jessica, son-in-law Jeff and four fabulous grandchildren. Tragically, his wife of 44 years, Barbara, passed away in 2015.
