Supported by an extensive educational background and professional experience, Dr. Sovers has excelled as a research physicist for over 40 years. He initially pursued an education at Brooklyn College in New York, obtaining a Bachelor of Science in physics and chemistry, magna cum laude, in 1958. Accepting National Science Foundation fellowships at Princeton University and the Inorganic Chemistry Laboratory at the University of Oxford, England, he continued his studies with a Doctor of Philosophy in physics and physical chemistry at Princeton University in 1962. Following these accomplishments, Dr. Sovers concluded his academic efforts with postdoctoral research at Columbia University between 1962 and 1964.
Dr. Sovers began his career as an employee with the Argonne National Laboratory in Illinois during 1958, further progressing to the post of a technical staff member with GTE Laboratories in Bayside, NY from 1964 to 1972. Subsequently, he served as a technical staff member for the Sony Corporation in Tokyo, Japan between 1972 and 1978. Furthermore, he found success as a contractor and a technical staff employee for the Caltech NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, CA, from 1979 until his retirement in 2015. Throughout his career, Dr. Sovers had excelled in three aspects of physics and chemistry while conducting measurements to establish a coordinate reference frame for interplanetary spacecraft navigation.
A lecturer in his field, Dr. Sovers co-wrote several books including, VLBI Summary Article, Reviews of Modern Physics; Astronomy and geodesy with radio interferometry: experiments, models, results, as well as a book detailing work that leads to the new celestial reference frame. He has authored a thesis titled, "d-Hybridization in Pi Bonds," and has penned other articles on physics and chemistry published in professional journals. In a career filled with achievements, he was proud to have worked on properly navigating a new generation of JPL Mars probes during his time there. A member of American Physical Society, American Astronomical Society, International Astronomical Union, and Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Honor Society, Dr. Sovers was a former member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and American Geophysical Union.
