A seasoned psychiatrist and educator, Dr. Nestler works as the Nash Family professor of neuroscience for the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, where he has also served as the director of the Friedman Brain Institute since 2008. Previously, he joined the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center as a distinguished professor and the chair of the department of psychiatry. His earliest positions in the field were that of professor and director of the division of molecular psychiatry for the Yale School of Medicine from 1987 until 2000. Even though his career has been filled with highlights, Dr. Nestler is especially proud of discovering how abused drugs change nerve cells in the brain to cause addiction and how chronic stress changes the brain in regards to depression.
An expert in his field, Dr. Nestler pursued an education at Yale University, where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts in 1976, a Doctor of Philosophy in 1982, and a Doctor of Medicine in 1983. Following these accomplishments, he completed an internship through McLean Hospital in Massachusetts and residency in psychiatry from Yale, and later earned an honorary Doctor of Philosophy from Uppsala University in Sweden in 2011. He retains professional affiliation with the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the National Academy of Medicine through which he won the Rhoda and Bernard Sarnat International Prize in Mental Health in 2010. Throughout his career, Dr. Nestler also served as the president of the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology (2011) and the Society for Neuroscience (2017).
Utilizing decades of academic experience, Dr. Nestler co-authored "Neurobiology of Mental Illness" with Dennis S. Charney, as well as "Molecular Neuropharmacology" with Steven E. Hyman and Robert C. Malenka. He has been honored with several awards for his work in neuroscience and psychiatry, including the Jordi-Folch-Pi Memorial Award through the American Society of Neurochemistry in 1990, the Bristol-Myers Squibb Freedom to Discover Neuroscience Research Grant in 2004 and the Patricia S. Goldman-Rakic Award in 2008. In light of all his accomplishments, Dr. Nestler has previously been featured in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the East, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in American Education and Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare.
