Dr. John M. Norman found success as a professor of soil science and atmospheric and oceanic science with University of Wisconsin-Madison from 1988 until his retirement 2009.

Graduating from the University of Minnesota with a Bachelor of Science in physics in 1964 and a Master of Science in soil science in 1967, Dr. Norman concluded his studies at the University of Wisconsin, where he earned a Doctor of Philosophy in soil science in 1971. Subsequently, he began his career as a postdoctoral fellow with the University of Aberdeen in Scotland from 1971 to 1972 and an assistant professor of meteorology from the Pennsylvania State University between 1972 and 1975. Dr. Norman later served the Pennsylvania State University as an associate professor from 1975 until his departure in 1978.
After working as a professor of agronomy with the University of Nebraska, Lincoln from 1978 to 1988, Dr. Norman found success as a professor of soil science and atmospheric and oceanic science with University of Wisconsin-Madison from 1988 until his retirement 2009. In relation to his primary responsibilities, he also served as a consultant for NASA, the White Sands Missile Range, Syracuse University, the United States Army Corps of Engineers, National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration, and the Yucca Mountain Nuclear Repository Project. An expert in the field, Dr. Norman has co-authored "Introduction to Environmental Biophysics," in 1998, and "Instruments for Studying Vegetation Canopies for Remote Sensing in Optical and Thermal Infrared Regions." Additionally, Dr. Norman has contributed his research to articles published in 167 peer-reviewed journal articles as well as chapters to books.
A testament to his success, Dr. Norman has been the recipient of numerous accolades and honors. He was presented with an Outstanding Biometeorologist Award from the American Meteorological Society in 2005, as well as fellowships from the Crop Science Society of America, the American Society of Agronomy, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. To remain aware of changes in the field, he maintains his affiliation with the American Society of Agronomy, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Soil Science Society of America and Sigma Xi. Beyond his primary responsibilities, Dr. Norman enjoys ballroom dancing in his spare time.
