In early 1945, at the age of 17, he joined the military and served as a U.S. Navy Hospital Corpsman, later becoming commissioned as Ensign in the U.S. Navy Medical Service Corps Reserve, being discharged as a Lieutenant. Over the years he gained valuable expertise in the field through research, engineering, and executive roles with the Kresge Eye Institute, Hughes Aircraft Company, the Office of Naval Research, Woodell Enterprises, Inc., the Department of the Interior, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Supported by more than 40 years of professional excellence, Dr. Miller most recently served as Program Coordinator for the Florida Institute of Oceanography in St. Petersburg, FL, from 1982 to 1992, where he also worked as Associate Director from 1980 to 1985. Throughout his career and up to the present, he performed in numerous bands and orchestras where he played clarinet, saxophone and bassoon.
An expert in his field, Dr. Miller holds a Bachelor of Science in experimental psychology, a Master of Arts in experimental psychology and physiology, and a Doctor of Philosophy in experimental psychology and physiology, all from Michigan State University. To remain abreast of changes in the field, he affiliated with the Optical Society of America, the Aerospace Medical Society, the American Psychological Association, the Human Factors Society, the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society, the Marine Technology Society, the Underwater Society of America, the American Academy of Underwater Sciences, the Explorers Club, and the Florida Aquaculture Association. In his spare time, he contributed to his community through the Boy Scouts of America, as well as coaching and managing various Little League teams. He was also President of the Pensacola Florida Chamber Orchestra, President of several civic associations, and Chairman of the Monroe County Florida Planning Commission.
With a plethora of knowledge at his disposal, Dr. Miller co-authored the book "Living and Working in the Sea" with Ian G. Koblick and wrote and edited such books as the first and second editions of the "National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration Diving Manual." In light of his professional excellence, he won the Arthur Flemming Award from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, 1966, the NOGI Science Award from the Underwater Society of America, 1986, and the Charles W. Schilling Award from the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society, 1989. The recipient of a Distinguished Alumnae Award from Michigan State University in 1973, he also received numerous accolades from the U.S. Navy, including a Distinguished Civilian Service Award, the highest award given a civilian, 1969, Superior Civilian Service Award, 1966, Sustained Superior Performance Awards and Outstanding Performance Ratings. In addition, he was featured in the third edition of Who's Who in Entertainment and the 23rd edition of Who's Who in the South and Southwest.
