With 60 years of professional experience, Dr. Dorfman has been recognized as professor emeritus of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine since 2012. Prior to his retirement, he was a professor with the college from 1985 to 2012 and with the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in 1985, and he was pathologist-in-chief with Sinai Hospital Baltimore from 1974 to 1985. Earlier in his career, he was director of pathology at the Hospital for Joint Diseases from 1964 to 1974, an associate pathologist with Sinai Hospital Baltimore from 1960 to 1964, and director of pathology with Sharon Hospital from 1958 to 1960.
Dr. Dorfman began his career as a student at New York University, where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts in 1947. He continued his studies with the State University of New York at Brooklyn (now known as the SUNY Downstate Medical Center), earning a Doctor of Medicine in 1951. He then joined Mount Sinai Hospital for a residency from 1952 to 1954, and he held a residency with Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center from 1954 to 1958. He is certified in pathologic anatomy by the American Board of Pathology.
A respected voice in his areas of interest, Dr. Dorfman has been an active leader in his community. He is the former president of the New York Pathological Society and the International Skeletal Society. The author of several books in his areas of expertise, he has served as a lecturer for Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School and a visiting professor at Wayne State University, Baylor College of Medicine, the Cleveland Clinic, Stony Brook University, Johns Hopkins University, the University of Michigan, Cornell University, the University of Pittsburgh, Brigham and Women's Hospital, and Yale University.
Throughout his career, Dr. Dorfman has been recognized for his contributions. The recipient of the Henry Jaffe Award from the Hospital for Joint Diseases, he received the Corinne Farrell Award from the International Skeletal Society, and the Alan Darby Award and Jean R. Oliver Award from the SUNY Downstate Medical Center. He has been featured in numerous honors publications, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the East, and Who's Who in the World.
