Dr. James V. "Jim" Carmichael Jr. has found success with the University of North Carolina at Greensboro as a professor since 2000.

During the earlier years of his tenure with the university, he held the posts of instructor, assistant professor, and associate professor between 1988 and 2000. Prior to these appointments, he served as a reference and instruction librarian at Georgia College in Milledgeville, as well as a trust administrative assistant for Trustco Bank in Atlanta between 1970 and 1981. Earlier in his career, he was briefly associated with the Lockheed Martin Corporation in Marietta, Georgia, as a logistics assistant and an inventory control clerk from 1969 to 1970.
A graduate of Emory University, Dr. Carmichael earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1969 and a Master of Librarianship in 1977. Soon thereafter, he attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, securing a Doctor of Philosophy in 1988. Utilizing his knowledge of the field, he contributed as an editor for the book, "Daring to Find Our Names: the Search for Lesbigay Library History," which was published in 1998. A highly skillful individual, he has written articles that were featured in professional journals.
To remain current with educational trends, Dr. Carmichael maintains professional alignment with the American Library Association, the North Carolina Library Association, and the Association for Library and Information Science Education. A recipient of the Louis Round Wilson Award from the Southeastern Library Association, he has also been presented with the Franklin M. Garrett Award from the Atlanta History Center and the Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, among many others. Outside of his professional responsibilities, he enjoys reading.
