She first joined HSU in 1982 and held the role of professor until her retirement in 2014. Earlier in her career, Dr. Wieand cultivated her expertise as a research associate with the VA Loma Linda Healthcare System from 1980 to 1982 and as an assistant professor at the University of Redlands in California from 1979 to 1980.
Alongside her primary endeavors, Dr. Wieand has authored a number of book chapters and has given research presentations at a variety of conferences on regional, national and international levels. Further, she has acted as a consultant for various mental health agencies and supervised marriage and family therapy interns in her private practice. In 2014, she began offering couples therapy workshops. Furthermore, Dr. Wieand contributed her skills as a therapist for the San Francisco AIDS Foundation and as a board member for several substance abuse agencies.
Prior to embarking on her career, Dr. Wieand earned a Bachelor of Arts in psychology from Manchester University in Indiana in 1963 and a Master of Arts in clinical psychology from Ball State University in Indiana in 1977. Concluding her studies with a Doctor of Philosophy in social personality psychology from the University of California, Riverside, in 1983, she was licensed as a psychologist in the state of California in 1989. In order to remain up to date with developments in her field, Dr. Wieand maintains affiliation with the American Psychological Association, the Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues, the Association for Psychological Science, and the Society for the Scientific Study of Sexuality.
For her professional efforts, Dr. Wieand has received of a number of honors and accolades. Notably, she was inducted into the National Honor Society for excellence in her field. Additionally, she was selected for inclusion in multiple editions of Who's Who in America.
