A Missouri native, Dr. Luetje attended Evansvlle College, Indiana, for a year, observing his uncle, an oral surgeon, which inspired him to pursue this field of medicine. Following this experience, he obtained a Bachelor's degree from Southeast Missouri State University in 1963 and a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Missouri in 1967. He then completed an internship at David Grant USAF Medical Center, Travis Air Force Base and an Otolaryngology residency at Wilford Hall USAF Medical Center, Lackland Air Force Base. After an additional three years at Keesler Air Force base and attaining the rank of lieutenant colonel, Dr. Luetje separated from the USAF and completed a 1-yr Fellowship in Otology and Neurotology in 1976 at the Otologic Medical Group and House Ear Institute in Los Angeles.
Dr. Luetje began his career with Dr. Pat A. Barelli in Kansas City, MO in 1976 with a medical and surgical practice limited to Otology and Neurotology. In 1980 he founded the non-profit Midwest Ear Institute for cochlear implantation of totally deaf adults and children. In 1985 he established the Otologic Center, Inc. in Kansas City, MO. where he remained active until his retirement from medical practice and clinical research in 2009. Specializing in medical and surgical treatment of hearing loss, chronic ear infections, cochlear implantation for deafness, surgical removal of acoustic neuromas and skull base tumors, he has also focused his practice on balance and vestibular disorders. For 5 years after retirement Dr. Luetje remained affiliated with the active staff of Saint Luke's Hospital and continued performing cochlear implantation with the Midwest Ear Institute.
The goal of his medical and surgical career was to establish and maintain a private practice that embraced an academic method including clinical research, publication of results, literature review and national societal memberships. Always, patient care was the prime concern.
Accruing years of research in bilateral cochlear implantation, auditory brainstem implantation in patients with bilateral acoustic tumors, the treatment of autoimmune inner ear disease, round window placement of an implantable hearing device, outcomes analysis of stapedectomy and outcomes analysis of acoustic tumor removal, Dr. Luetje has authored more than 45 articles for scientific publications such as the Journal of Otology and Neurotology and The American Journal of Otology. He also contributed as a longtime editorial board member of the American Journal of Otology beginning in 1988. The co-editor, with Dr. William House, of a book titled "Acoustic Tumors: Diagnosis and Management," Dr. Luetje has penned chapters to 11 textbooks, including the fourth edition of "Head and Neck Surgery: Otolaryngology" in 2005 and "Essentials of Otology and Neurotology," which is set for release soon. He has presented numerous papers at societal scientific meetings.
An elected fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, the Society of the Air Force Clinical Surgeons and the Society of Military Otolaryngologists, Dr. Luetje is also a fellow and the past president of the American Neurotology Society and the American Otological Society as well as a fellow and former section vice president of the American Laryngological, Rhinological and Otological Society. The former president of the Missouri Society of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, he is a member of the Greater Kansas City Metropolitan Medical Society, the Centurion Club Deafness Research Foundation and the American Medical Association. During his years with these professional organizations, Dr. Luetje has been presented with several Citation Awards. The most prestigious of these are the Award of Merit in 2016 from the American Otological Society, and the Patrick Brookhouser Award of Excellence from the American Laryngological, Rhinological and Otological Society in 2017.
